Title Movie Review:

Name: :
Apple Mae S. Toñacao “The Doctor!”
Level: II – D Date: 08/16/2020

The movie “The Doctor” is a 1991 movie all about a successful but egocentric doctor
who doesn’t care about his patients’ feelings. He is a self- centered individual who later on
change due to his personal experiences. I have only seen this movie and wanted to give an
honest opinion about it.

Dr. Jack McKee (the main character) is a successful surgeon in a leading hospital. He
rarely has time for his family for he is a busy and workaholic person. He also lacks manners
towards his patients. The decorum in the operating theater is very casual and lacks
professionalism. Returning home from a charity event, Dr. McKee has a coughing fit. He coughs
up blood and shocked his wife Anne. He went to an examination and discovered a tumor in his
throat. The biopsy comes back positive for cancer. His time spent with a not so good treatment
of his doctor towards him leads to his transformation. He experience more disappointments
from his therapy. He have seen a lot of scene and empathy from fellow patients and have much
better view of the delays and missteps of their health care workers. As Dr. McKee experiences
the life of being a patient, he then understands the emotional states of the patients. He have got
a friend, June Ellis, a fellow cancer patient who has a brain tumor. She made him promise not to
lie or mislead patients again. Dr. McKee and June took off to a Native American show, but the
pace is too much for her. Anne (Dr. McKee’s wife) misunderstood her husband’s relationship to
June. Dr. McKee’s treatment did not go well, therefore he have gone to surgery. He asks a fellow
surgeon whom he ridiculed before to do his surgery and asks forgiveness for how he acted
before. Dr. McKee’s cancer have been treated but June died. Everything leads to his complete
change. He then teaches the medical interns about the importance of compassion and
sensitivity towards their patients. Dr. McKee puts the interns into a patients situation and made
them experience how to be in the shoes of the patients for them to learn and have a deeper
understanding about it.

The casts of the movie did a good job. They played their roles well and expresses the
feelings of the story very well. It really reaches through the hearts of the audiences. William
Hurt who played the main character Dr. Jack McKee did a very nice act on playing his role for he
have delivered fully the main point of the story.

There are a lot of parts in this movie that I like. But there is this one scene that I like the
most, it is when Dr. McKee showed how he changed a lot out of his experiences. During a
surgery of an Indian man in the movie, he showed a compassion to his patient. He showed how
he cares a lot to his patient and to the patient’s family. The scene that I dislike the most is when
a patient with a chest scar mentions her husband wants to know if the scar will go away, Dr.
McKee responds that she should tell him that she is just like a “Playboy centerfold, because she
has the staple marks to prove it.” I can see the disappointment and hurt feelings from the
patient. Dr. McKee in that scene doesn’t care about the emotional state of his patient.

This story is a very good example of the golden rule: “Don’t do unto others what you
don’t want to do unto to you.” Here we will learn how important this golden rule is. We should
be sensitive towards others and adjust ourselves for the common good. We should not think
only of ourselves because there will always be a time that we are the one who needed
something from others.

This movie will be liked by everyone especially by the elders as it shows a lot of lesson
that they could teach to the young ones. I would recommend this movie to my fellow youth for
them to learn and appreciate well the golden rule and many more. I would not want to
recommend this movie to children especially when there are no parents or elderlies around
them. They may misinterpret some scenes in here and it may result them to fear doctors and
hospitals. This movie is a rated PG film who requires parental guidance for children who are
watching. My final opinion for this film if it is good or not, I would say it is a good movie who
teaches everyone a moral lesson that they could carry on their whole lives.

If I will be rating this movie from 1 to 5 where 1 is the lowest and 5 is the highest, I will
give it a big high 5. This movie deserves to have a rate of 5 for the roles are played so well, the
lesson of the movie is delivered very well, and the emotion of the movie is well delivered.
