Seasons in The Philippines

The document discusses different types of air masses, fronts, weather phenomena like the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone, thunderstorms, tornadoes, seasons in the Philippines, and monsoons. It provides definitions and descriptions of maritime and continental air masses, cold fronts and occluded fronts. It also explains that the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone is a low pressure belt near the equator where the trade winds of the northern and southern hemispheres meet, often generating thunderstorms. Thunderstorms and tornadoes are also briefly defined. The seasons in the Philippines include a dry season from November to April and a rainy season from May to October. Monsoons are described as seasonal reversing winds accompanied by changes in precipitation

Air masses

Air masses over water are called maritime air masses, while air masses over land are called continental air
masses. The borderline between two air masses is called a front. ... A cold front is an area of
cold air displacing warm air. An occluded front is where a cold front catches up with a warm front.

Fronts

Fronts are boundaries between air masses of different temperatures. Fronts are actually zones of transition,
but sometimes the transition zone, called a frontal zone, can be quite sharp. The type of front depends on both
the direction in which the air mass is moving and the characteristics of the air mass.

Inter Tropical Convergence Zone

The Inter Tropical Convergence Zone, or ITCZ, is a belt of low pressure which circles the Earth generally
near the equator where the trade winds of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres come together. It is
characterised by convective activity which generates often vigorous thunderstorms over large areas.

Thunderstorm

A thunderstorm, also known as an electrical storm or a lightning storm, is a storm characterized by the presence of
lightning and its acoustic effect on the Earth's atmosphere, known as thunder. Relatively weak thunderstorms are
sometimes called thundershowers.

Tornado

A tornado is a rapidly rotating column of air that is in contact with both the surface of the Earth and a cumulonimbus
cloud or, in rare cases, the base of a cumulus cloud.

Seasons in the Philippines

There are only two official seasons of weather in the Philippines, and they are:

 Dry Season (tag-araw) – November to April

 Rainy Season (tag-ulan) – May to October

There are other “unofficial seasons” in the Philippines, and they are:

 Winter/Cold Season (tag-lamig) – November to January

 Summer/Hot Season (tag-init) – March to May
 Spring or when things grow (tag-sibol)
 Autumn or when things die off (tag-lagas)

Monsoon

Monsoon is traditionally defined as a seasonal reversing wind accompanied by corresponding changes in

precipitation, but is now used to describe seasonal changes in atmospheric circulation and precipitation associated
with the asymmetric heating of land and sea.
