d. Presentation

Today were going to read a short story “A

Footnote to Youth” written by Jose Garcia Villa.
Let’s try to relate the story in our life and identify
the elements of the story later on.

Footnote to Youth was written by Jose Garcia

Villa in 1933.

Jose Garcia Villa was a Filipino poet, literary

critic, short story writer, and painter. His work is
mere on beauty and appreciation and because of
his writing style he was awarded as the National
Artist of the Philippines title for literature in 1973.
He introduced the "reversed consonance rhyme
scheme" as well as the extensive use of
punctuation marks—especially commas, which
made him known as the Comma Poet.
Yes, sir
Read the story quietly. Afterwards were going to
have an oral reading then discuss it.
Yes, ma’am
Okay! Class let’s start reading the short story (the student start reading)
starting with this row, and the rest read silently.
Each student will read a paragraph. Ok, lets begin.

e. Motive Question
Dodong felt that he was no longer a boy because
What made Dodong feel that he was no longer a he had pimples on his face and his lip already was
boy but already a man? darkened. He thought that those were the
evidence of his being a man.
f. Discussion

Did you understand the story class?

Yes, sir.
Very good. To better understand the story, let’s
try to answer the following questions.

The short story is about a Dodong who entered

1. What is the short story all about? marriage life with Teang at the age of seventeen,
and who later felt remorseful about his married
life.

The characters are Dodong, Teang, Lucio, Blas,

2. Who are the characters in the story? Tona, and Dodong’s mother and father.

3. What can you say about the characters? Dodong who married Teang at age 17 and they
has seven children.

Teang is a loving wife because even she was

unhappy with their marriage she did not complain
to Dodong.

Blas is the first-born son of Dodong and Teang.

He married at the age of 18. Blas is a stubborn
person because he insisted to get married at his
young age. He is hasty in making decision and not
looking to the consequences of his action.

4. Describe the setting of the story? Anyone who The setting is in a barrio or in a rural place where
would like to site a situation in the story that most people work in fields. There were rice fields
describes the sitting? all around the place and carabaos. There were
streams where people bathe after the fieldwork
soiled them. There were no electrical lamps,
rather people used petroleum lamp to light their
houses.
5. What character is revealed by Dodong when he His reaction towards it revealed that from the very
got tickled by the worm, jerked his foot, flinging beginning Dodong's character is someone who
the worm into air yet never bothered to look at doesn't bother to look at the consequences of his
where it fell? actions.

6. How did Teang find married life? Teang found her married life difficult to the
extent that she was unhappy with their marriage.
For six successive years, Dodong and Teang kept
having children. Besides that, she spent the rest of
her life with the interminable household work –
cooking, laundering, cleaning the house and
taking care of the children. She became shapeless
even at the young age.

Correct! She was unhappy with their marriage that

she even wondered how life would be if she had
married Lucio, her suitor, instead of Dodong.

7. Blas asked for permission to get married. Why It is because both fathers married early, they
then do you think that Dodong and Teang did not lacked the experience and the know-how with
prevent their son from experiencing those regards to raising children: hence the fact that
hardships which they’ve gone through? they were unable to fulfill their responsibility as
parents in guiding their kids down a wiser path.

Correct! This is particularly due to the fact that his

father never had that wisdom either. Such wisdom
can only be passed on by those people who greatly
influence our lives - which in most cases are our
parents. So, when dealing with his son Blas,
Dodong could only do what he knew like what his
father did with him, and that is to allow Blas to
marry early, when he should have discouraged
him instead. The lesson then becomes universal in
the sense that it is not only for the young ones but
to parents as well that they should have the
wisdom on how to guide their children the proper
way.

8. Explain the line “Youth must triumph... now. This phrase depicts the cycle of life which means
Love must triumph... now. one must experience being young first before
turning into an adult, and then when he is ready
enough that is the time that he may enter into a
marriage life. One must enjoy his younger years,
enjoy being in love, then he will be ready for the
so-called life – to live and to build his own home.

9. Why the story is entitled “A Footnote to His story is entitled "Footnote to Youth" because
Youth”? it emphasizes something for the youth to realize
and that is not to marry early.

10. What is the morale of the Footnote to Marriage in a very young age when you are not
Youth? yet prepared with the obligations accompanied to
it will give birth to more problems.
Correct, therefore, before entering to a married
life, we must not only think twice but a hundred
times. So that you won’t regret it.

g. Generalization

reminds us of our responsibilities and realities that
come with marriage and the family life. Its
