TOPIC 2 LEARNING
What did you learn in basketball? What are the trivia? What are the different
equipments in basketball?
The things I learned in basketball are being cooperative with the team and how to
build a sense of camaraderie. It also taught us when to pass, pay attention to the
teammates and to the opponents, and to become alert and execute some fast
movements in order to shoot the ball on the ring and gain points against the opponents.
Moreover, in basketball you have to trust your entire team to succeed which I can
compare in life wherein you should trust other people in order to help you out in your
difficult situation.
The trivia in Basketball are Michael Jordan who resigned in January 1999
however returned to the league in 2001, has scored more points (5,987) in the playoffs
than some other player. Also, the shot clock was invented by Danny Biasone, owner of
the Syracuse Nationals, during the 1953-1954 season to help up speed up the game. It
has been cited as the most important event in the NBA. Moreover, No other sport has
more injuries than basketball and the most common basketball injury is a sprained
ankle. However, knee inflammation is the injury that causes players to miss the most
games. Initially, dribbling was not a large part of the game. Players would catch the ball,
be allowed a few steps to slow down, stop, and then throw the ball from that spot. When
the modern basketball was invented in the 1950’s dribbling became a crucial part of the
game. Furthermore, Basketball incorporated rules from a children’s game called “Duck
on a Rock” in which a stone was placed on an elevated object, as a tree stump, with a
player guarding it. Other players would try to knock the stone off by throwing “ducks” or
rocks.
The different equipments in basketball are basketball court, basket net, ball,
basketball game clock, score board sheet, clothing and backboard. A basketball court
shall be hard rectangular surface free from obstructions which has a dimension of 28
meters by 15 meters, has boundary lines of 5 cm in width (side lines, end lines), and
has a center line of 15.30 meter long parallel to the end lines with a front court and
back. The center circle has a radius of 1.80 meters (outer edge) and the three-point field
goal area has a 6.75 meters. The floor area marked on the court limited by the lines
forming 2 arcs 6. Free throw lines are parallel to the end line and have 3.60 meter long
and 5.80 meter from the line. The standard size of court by meter is 28.65 long, 15.24m,
while the standard measurement of the three (3) point area from the ring is 10 feet rim.
Next is basketball net which compromise of the ring and the net. The ring is solid iron
measuring 45 centimeters in diameter. Third is ball, which is 75 to 78 centimeters in
circumference with the weight of 600 to 650 grams. This ball must be made of rubber
covered with a case of leather rubber or synthetic material. It will be rebound to a height
not less than 1.20 meters and not more than 1.40 meters. Fourth is , basketball game
clock, which functions as the game starts, and stops when the ball goes out of bounds,
or when a foul is committed. Fifth is clothing, which needs to be loose-fitting shorts, for
the players’ mobility and sleeves vest as the standard attire. The shoes of the players
must be rubber soled and with ankle support for protection, although these are not
necessary a toweled sock is a necessity to reduce the risk of blistering. Lastly is
backboard, which is typically made up of wood. Other backboard was made of
fiberglass measuring three centimeters thick with specification of 1.80 meters
horizontally, 1.05 meters vertically and 2.90 meters above the floor. Surface is
rectangular drown behind the ring, 0.59 meters horizontal 0.45 meters vertical.
TOPIC 3 SKILLS
What are the different skills in playing basketball? Identify the different skills and
techniques? What did you learn?
The different skills and techniques in playing basketball are footwork, passing,
dribbling, hand drills, catching or receiving, pivoting and shooting. The Footwork are
basic stance wherein the position of most foot movement , running wherein the player
needs to be fast speed, pivot wherein in this position player revolves his front and back
position and jumping which players have the skill of footwork in the air. Second is
Passing, wherein it must be mastered by players together with the team mates. The
reason is that it is the quickest method to move the ball around the court to make a
certain technique to penetrate near the basket for a score. Third is Dribbling, wherein it
is an act of the player into continuously bounces the ball on the floor. Dribbling too often
can easily lose the ball. Similarly, the player is required to take steps with the ball. To
dribble successfully, the player pushes the ball down toward the ground using fingertips
instead of patting it to ensure greater control. Fourth is Hand drills, wherein holding the
ball is a very important skill that a basketball player must possess. This handling skill is
a prerequisite in shooting, passing, and dribbling. Fifth is Catching / Receiving, which
must be developed by basketball players in order to excel in this game. It is true that
shooting must be rehearsed for more accuracy in order to obtain score, but to go
around the court, hurling shots, passing, getting and ball assistance recreate state of
the body. Sixth is pivot, it is to maneuver or turn from one place or direction to a
different position or direction using only one foot as you pivot, and this can be done with
either right or left foot without dribbling the ball. Lastly, Shooting which is considered as
the best skill that a basketball player must possess. In the first place, one can obtain
good score through shooting. This is done by tossing the ball through the bushel
through technique depending on the style of the players and circumstances. The perfect
direction of the shot is somehow questionable yet a circular way of throwing the ball is
suggested. Players must shoot straight forwardly into the crate or may utilize the
backboard to divert the ball into the bushel.
The things that I learned in basketball are Basketball played a major role in
shaping confidence of a person and improve the skills while practicing it. Most people
generally believe that basketball only teach you how to win games or be physically
strong, but I believe basketball have a far greater impact on your life. They help you
develop real-world skills that can be applied to all areas of your life. Playing a basketball
involves both wins and losses. You learn to be proud of your success without
demeaning your opponents. You learn to accept failures with grace and come back
stronger next time. With time you realize it’s not really the win or loss that makes a
difference. If you give it everything you’ve got, no matter what the outcome, you can
walk away with your head held high. In basketball, you are taught to never give up. A
few minutes can change the game. Even on days when your shots just don’t go in you
have to keep trying and helping your team in other areas. You need to contribute in the
defense, go after loose balls, make good passes and help in any way you can. You can
never give up – not on the game, not on your team, not on yourself. You keep trying till
the very last second. Even injury should not be a reason you give up. I can tell from
personal experience that injuries have made me stronger. In life too, there will be a
million occasions where you will want to take the easy way out and give up. But you
need to hold on and brave the storm. This is what we learn from sports – to never give
up.
