Florence Nightingale Reflection
In the midst of unfortunate chaos, Florence Nightingale manifested great bravery, selflessness,
and the attained the title as savior for those who are in need. Those are the things that describe
Florence Nightingale the most. Even though her parents didn’t want her to help the ill, she disobeyed
her father’s commands and continued to save the sick behind his back. She strived to help with
continuous passion for aiding soldiers who are in need. In her ultimate passion for giving assistance to
wounded people, she became selfless in the process. Florence declined the possibility of having a
wondrous marriage that could lead to having a family. She rejected the man who proposed to her and
instead, went overseas to accomplish the thing she claims she has passion for; caring.
When she saw the wounded soldiers laying on straw mats that seems like coffins that were
waiting for their imminent death, she immediately rushed towards them and passed one by one to see
how they were doing. The soldiers acted tough but the expressions on their faces cannot deny the fact
that they are indeed in an ample amount of pain. The men were still on their uniforms, bleeding and
accompanying them are pests, dirt with their whimpers shouting for help. Florence acted upon in a flash
and asked the commander in chief for clothing, bandages, operating tables and other necessities that
are needed for the hospital. However, she was harshly declined with that idea. Even though she was
rejected, that did not stop her from helping those men. She bought medical stuff with the use of her
own money and provided the wounded soldiers with proper care. The group of nurses cleaned the
whole hospital so that no contamination of diseases would occur. Florence took care of the ill with
kindness, passion, and wholehearted concern. She is not only considered as a savior, but as a hero. She
has changed the community and works in the hospital and have saved lives due to her unmistakable
determination and diligence.
Not only the works in the hospital has changed, but also the profession of nursing in the
industry. Back then, nursing was a career that held so little respect since caring is not really a job that
needed any special skills or trainings. It was not an employment that requires major education.
However, even though Florence came from an elite family, she did not look down upon this line of
profession and instead, improved the community in the hospital. She has tackled great funds after fixing
the hospital conditions and in that moment, nursing rose up to be a great and honorable profession in
the whole world. She was the one who gave the path for success in the medical field. Even in this world
today, she is still considered as a hero to many. Nurses now in the 21 st century are indeed in demand in
the whole world and it is all thanks to Florence Nightingale, the lady with the lamp.
