Comparison of the Film Goyo and Heneral Luna
A Reflection Paper
Both Gregorio Del Pilar and Antonio Luna were underrated heroes. Most of the Filipinos only know
Gregorio because he was described as the most handsome man that fought for our country, while some only know
Antonio Luna since he was the brother of the painter of the famous artwork: Spolarium , Juan Luna. As the movies
of the two came out, it seemed that a lot of people realized how great these two heroes were, and how they fought
for the Philippines until their last breath.
Comparisons between the two movies were inevitable. Heneral Luna became a big hit while it was still
showing, and of course, people looked forward to seeing another iconic movie of another hero: Gregorio Del Pilar or
Goyo after he was shown at the credit part of Heneral Luna. In the film Heneral Luna, it showed what a perfect hero
should be. That a hero should be able to give everything he has for the sake of saving his own country. The character
of Heneral Luna was consistent until the end, even if he was betrayed by his co-Filipino, Emilio Aguinaldo (what’s
worse is that Aguinaldo was even the president of the Philippines at that time) he still fought back until he didn’t
have the life to do so. In contrast to Heneral Luna, the film Goyo showed that even heroes have flaws. That heroes
are just humans that are also capable of making mistakes. Goyo, compared to Heneral Luna, realized only his
growth in the latter part of the movie. In the film, it can clearly be seen the character development of Goyo. From
being a confused young boy to an assured young man. What’s funny is that both Goyo and Heneral Luna are similar
in the way that they are portrayed in the films as impulsive and self-centered men.
While heroes are seen as people who are role models for everyone, they are also just humans who can
commit a mistake, without them intending to. The films Heneral Luna and Goyo showed us what it takes to be
called a hero, and even the tiniest thing that we can do for our country can make us a hero.
