Now, let us define what Festival is…

- Festival is an event ordinarily celebrated by a community and centering on some beliefs
and its religion or traditions.
Activity1. “Team Learning”
Direction: I will group the class to 6 groups. I will give an envelope each group. Inside the
envelopes are sets of Festivals with keywords. I will play a video then I want you to observe
each video to determine what festival is being presented. The group who will identify the video
that is being presented will shout “Viva” and paste the corresponding festival in front with short
explanation. Is that clear?
1st Video is SUBLIAN FESTIVAL
- The highlight of the two-week long festival is the Subli dance, a worship dance of the
Holy Cross.
- It is a very long celebration of fiesta. They dance the Subli Dance and they honor the
Holy Cross.
- Sublian came from the word subli, a combination of the words subsub, a Tagalog word,
which means falling on the head,or being in a crouching position; and bali, a Tagalog
word, which means broken or bent.
- Sublian Festival is celebrated every July 23 in Batangas City.
2nd Video is ATI-ATIHAN FESTIVAL
- The Ati-atihan festival is very lively, colorful and it is a weeklong fiesta. It is known as
the mother of all festivals in the Philippines. It is a feast held annually in honor of Sto.
Nino in the island of Kalibo, Aklan. The celebration begins in the 3rd week of January.
- The meaning of Ati-atihan is “to be like aetas” or “make believe in atis”.
- Ati-atihan is a celebration of pact between Spaniards and Aetas.
- They yell “Viva Sto. Nino” meaning “Mabuhay Sto. Nino” and “HalaBira”meanscheer a
person to give it all he’s got.
3rd Video is KADAYAWAN FESTIVAL
- A thanksgiving festival because of bountiful harvest. It is held every 3rd week of August
in Davao City. It is called as the “King of all Festivals in the Philippines”.
- Its name derives from the friendly greeting "Madayaw.
- This ritual serves as their thanksgiving to the Gods particularly to the "Manama" (the
Supreme Being) and “Bulan” (a moon deity).
th
4 Video IBALONG FESTIVAL
 The Ibalong Festival celebrates the epic story of the town of Ibalong with three legendary
heroes, namely Baltog, Handyong, Bantong and other ancient heroes.
 They fought mythical creatures such as the tandayag (giantboar), dambuhala (one-eyed
monster), oryol (half-woman, half-serpent), and a giant called Rabot.
 Ibalong Festival of Legazpi City has no official schedule as of this writing, but it is
tentatively slated from August 3 – 30.
th
5 Video is SINULOG FESTIVAL
- The festival is characterized by a very long parade with many groups of people dressed in
colourful costumes, finding their way through the streets while dancing the Sinulog.
- This Sinulog dance is now the traditional ritual dance in honor of Santo Niño. The dance
is accompanied by the sound of the drums while the dancers move two steps forward
followed by one step backward.
- Shouting is necessary because the pilgrims have to be sure that they will be heard by the
Santo Niño.“Pit Señor! Señor Santo Niño, Manoy Kiloy...." means “to call upon, ask and
plead. Thank you for the baby boy”
- The famous Sinulog festival in Cebu City is held every year on the third Sunday of
January.

6th Video is Moriones Festival
- The "Moriones" are men and women in costumes and masks replicating the garb of
biblical Roman soldiers as interpreted by local folks.
- The participants use morion masks to depict the Roman soldiers and Syrian mercenaries
within the story of the Passion of the Christ.
- The Moriones refers to the masked and costumed penitents who march around the town
or seven days searching for Saint Longinus.
