TEACHER OBSERVATION REPORT

Teacher Name: Samantha Lopinto Teacher ID: 1574497
School Year: 2019-2020 School Name/DBN: 02M033-P.S. 033 Chelsea Prep

CLASSROOM OBSERVATION (OBS):

In each observation, all components for which there is observed evidence must be rated. Each form must
contain lesson-specific evidence for each of the components observed during a classroom observation.

This observation was: (check one)

Formal Observation (full period) Informal Observation (15 minutes minimum)

Date of Observation: 10/23/2019 Time/Period: Period 2

Component Ratings

1a (obs): Demonstrating knowledge of content and pedagogy 3- Effective

The objective of this lesson was to introduce students to two additional strategies
for starting 3-digit addition problems. The teachers made the objective clear and
continued to reference it throughout the lesson. The teachers clearly explained the
content during the mini-lesson and broke the students into ability-level groups to
work on either reinforcing the concepts or providing a third strategy students could
use.

1e (obs): Designing coherent instruction 3- Effective

The learning activities were matched to the instructional outcomes. They provided
opportunities for higher-level thinking; students were taught a strategy but there
were multiple ways they could utilize it. There was differentiation for groups of
students.

2a: Creating an environment of respect and rapport 4- Highly Effective

Respectful behavior was observed between students. Students felt comfortable
asking questions, making connections, and sharing answers.

2d: Managing student behavior 4- Highly Effective

Student behavior was entirely appropriate.

3b: Using questioning and discussion techniques 3- Effective

The teacher asked a variety of low-level and high-level questions, including: I
notice that 263 has how many tens? What does a friendly number mean to you?
Can you explain what you're doing now? Teacher provided an opportunity for
student discussion during the min-lesson and in the small group observed.
Students were provided with math talk prompts to support their discussions.

3c: Engaging students in learning 3- Effective
Most students were intellectually engaged in the lesson. One student made a
comparison between a strategy taught and a previous strategy taught. Students
were invited to explain their thinking with the strategies they used.

3d: Using assessment in instruction 3- Effective

The teacher assessed students in the small group with a standards-based
checklist. Additionally, she provided specific feedback to the students working
independently. For example, she said to one student, "You could try starting with
the whole number and then adding on part by part." Students completed an exit
ticket at the end of the lesson.

4e (obs): Growing and developing professionally N/A

Additional Evaluator Notes (please attach more pages, as necessary):

Ms.
LoPinto,

Thank you for welcoming me into your class on 10/23/19. We met on 11/1/19 for your informal feedback,
which
included:

You and your co-teacher explicitly taught and modeled different addition strategies. You provided
opportunities for students to not only practice the strategies, but also to talk about it. All observed interactions
were
positive
and
respectful.

Consider additional opportunities for students to think and reflect. After a partner share, you may find it
beneficial to have 1-2 students share out their strategies and steps with the whole class. Continue to
emphasize
that
there
are
many
different
routes
you
can
take
to
get
the
correct
answer.

Thank
you
for
all
of
your
hard
work
in
supporting
our
students!

-Ms. Remsen
