last time, I guess you are now ready for our
next topic.
But for me to assure that you will be really
ready for our next lesson, let’s have first an ice
breaker.
I have prepared here an activity called “Read
the Colors.”
Are you familiar with that activity? No ma’am.
Okay so what you are going to do is that you
will read the color based on the color itself, not
on what is written inside each circle.

A. Activity Proper

I am glad that you have enjoyed the activity


that we had. So now, to continue to our new
lesson for today. I have here pictures of
several objects. Now, what I want you to do is
that I want you to describe each picture that I
will show.
Are you ready? Yes, ma’am!

B. Analysis

If last time we tackled about linking verbs,


today we will be discussing about modal
verbs.
So, can someone define what a modal verb is? Ma’am, a modal verb is a verb used in showing
abilities, giving permissions, advices, obligations

Going back to the activity we had earlier, each
picture shows the function of modal verbs.

Take a look at this picture.
We can describe the picture as the man can
speak three languages.
What is the modal verb used in the sentence? Ma’am, the modal verb used in the sentence was
the word “can”.

Now, what does it function in the sentence? Ma’am it shows what is the ability of the man.

We can use the modal verb can in showing
abilities.
How about the modal verb could?
When do we usually use it?
How can we use it showing abilities? Ma’am if the ability is in the past, we have to use
the modal verb, could.

Remember that can show present abilities


while could show past abilities.

Okay let’s move on to the next one.


This picture asks what? It asks permission ma’am.

When asking permission, we can use the
modal verbs can, could and may.
Let’s try to use it in a sentence asking a (The students will create their own examples.)

Aside from that the modal verbs might and
could, we can also use the modal verbs can
and may in expressing possibilities.

C. Application

Since you already know the different kinds of


modal verbs as well as how they function in a
sentence, we will be having a writing activity.
Now, what you are going to do is that you
must make 3 sentences showing abilities,
giving advices, permissions, obligations, and
expressing possibilities using the modal verbs
located inside the box. Take note, you have to
use each modal verb accordingly. Make sure to
use it properly in a sentence.
You can write your sentences in a one whole
sheet of paper and you only have five minutes (The students will comply to the task given by the
