2nd Regional Youth Convention
17-19 November 2017, Manila, Philippines
This year, WAMY Philippines Office hosted the 2nd Regional Youth Convention 2017 at Great Eastern Hotel
Manila, Quezon City, Philippines. Delving into the realities facing the prospective growth of youth in an
information age, RYC continues to provide avenues that serve as platforms for youths in the South-East Asian
region, to share and discuss timely concerns and explore ways of addressing them. Launching the theme
“Morality in an Information-age”, RYC 2017 invited experts and professionals to share their experiences and
expertise in promoting youth development in today’s fast-paced and ever-growing society with too much
information gushing with no proper filtration. Similarly, RYC 2017 provided an avenue to bring closer ties with all
WAMY staff across the region by working together, sharing best practices, learn from each other and craft
resolutions which are deem applicable in their respective region.
More than 200 participating individuals ranging from experts and young professionals, student and community
leaders and WAMY Staff have successfully attended the convention. These delegates are coming from selected
15 cities and provinces around the Philippines, 4 WAMY offices and 7 countries in Southeast Asia, and invited
guests from United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, and government Agencies in the Philippines. It
showcased innovative summit, workshops, conference, youth talks, research simulations, presentations and
focus group discussions that continue to serve as platform for youth in the South East Asian region.

One of the main component of RYC 2017 is the Research Summit. The overwhelming contemporary issues of the
Muslims worldwide powered with massive misinformation by the mainstream media are eminent and are less
concerned in the academic research as well as less tackled in today’s Da’wah initiatives. Hence, a research
summit by means of Youth Talks, Discussion and Presentation were held to give high importance of such
initiatives especially on the long-term objectives of a research programs. Furthermore, a research information
hub was launched. It was facilitated by WAMY Malaysia office and soon to operate on the online platform. The
former output of 1st RYC entitled “Do Good” as platform for Digital Da’wah was also introduced.

2nd Regional Youth Convention
17-19 November 2017, Manila, Philippines
Another important aspect of the convention is the WAMY Philippines’ branded workshop called Skills
Development Programs (SDP). It constituted workshops on Managerial Skills for Organizational Operations and
Digital Da’wah Training for the general audience. Whereas a Training design for WAMY Staff Offices in Southeast
Asia was separately conducted. The training workshops are beneficial in all aspects for the participants. It was a
whole day training wherein participants are clustered into three to fully-attend and participate in the whole
duration of the workshop.
During the entire duration of the convention, a certain principles were maintained. Morality in an Information-
Age showcases proper teaching of the Holy Qur’an and Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace and blessings
upon Him) that is most applicable in this era. These are inculcated through primarily by observing daily
obligatory prayers, self and group discipline, physical and mental alertness, among others.
Participating regions especially those around the Philippines were strategically selected. It is one of the hopes of
this initiative to provide exposure opportunities to the young and emerging student and youth leaders in those
areas. This is in order to thwart the spread of radical ideologies among them and prevent them from being
recruited by lawless elements, In God's Will, by reinforcing to their mindset the importance of Proper Morality in
all level, guided by the Qur’an and Sunnah. Philippines’ delegation agreed that this is the Largest Gathering of
Muslim youth leaders across the country in a moderate environment to date. Gracing the initiative were the
Office of the Philippine National Police through the Chief of Police of Quezon City Police Department as well as
the Director of the Museo ng Maynila.

IV. OBJECTIVES. The following are the quality objectives of 2017 Regional Youth Convention:
To understand the importance of information-based Da’wah and advocacy in both academic and

Islamic message and Muslim communities.
To explore and know proper etiquettes on most current digital media trends.
To acquire or enhance managerial skills applicable to run youth organizations.
To establish a Regional Islamic Information Hub, that serves as a credible source for Muslims and non-

To strengthen youth organizations across Southeast Asian region and the host country, the Philippines.
**Attachment I
Creating a Communication and Information Hub Regional Islamic Information Hub (RIIH)
A centralized research and information hub would provide both Muslims and non-Muslims an avenue where they access
information pertaining Muslims’ social, cultural and political affairs. Such a hub would not only reduce the menace of

representation of Islamic teachings in the region and provide a reliable Islamic information source for government,
professionals, guidance and academic institutions.

On top of the main objective of Research Program is to mobilize or inform action. It seek to contextualize
any findings within a larger scope of the research to benefits the community. It gives due emphasize on the
implications for policy makers and/or any future projects initiatives.
Student organizations across the Philippines often conduct annual orientation for freshmen Muslim students
in their respective institution. However, beside from power-point presentations and some talks, there is no hand-
outs to be given such as University Manual for Muslim Students. Likewise in the efforts to deliver messages across
communities, preachers commonly use similar methodology to discuss Islam or any topic of interests. And this is
mainly because there is no available publication with an evidence-based interventions or in short lack of a published
research works.
Thus, Research Simulation is an initiatives in order to incite student and youth leaders to inculcate
community and school based research programs as an important aspects of Da’wah works to benefits the Muslim-
Filipinos and neighboring countries in Asia and perhaps any part of the world whereby applicable.
Participants to the Regional Youth Convention were requested to prepare a One-pager research proposal on
topics that ranges from socio-political, cultural, economic, sports, education, health, da’wah, and any topic that suits
their interests. These topics were utilized during the Day 2 of the convention to stimulate active participations
though Project Pitching in delivering innovative ideas, convincing co-delegates, enhance public speaking, and most
importantly appreciate a research-based da’wah initiatives. The time allotment given is very limited yet it does not
prevails the selected participants to come up with a very good result for research project proposals. Brother Adzhar
J. Madjid, RYC Program In-charge and Research Coordinator for WAMY Philippines Research Program, explained the
rules of the preceding.
Research Simulation 1 offers an ideation and identifying research topic. Gentlemen were grouped according
to their initial cluster from one through six whereas ladies clustered from seven to ten making it a ten groups
sourcing out among the crowds of more than 200 young leaders. In this round, almost all participants are able to
express their choice of topic among their own group. Whereas some delegates shared similar ideas and converged,
others became isolated and had to support others. At the end of first round, three (3) chosen topic per cluster were
developed and introduced to the next round.
In Research Simulation 2, each cluster’s chosen topics were presented to other clusters according to the
gender category. Their primary objective is to convince delegates belonging to the other clusters in any way possible
to support their idea, by acquiring the highest number of stars to their proposed research topic/s. Each of the
delegates are given one (1) star at hand and winning them is the challenging part. It necessitates an impressive 90
seconds project pitching and marketing strategy and even fan-club to earn favors. In this round, Top Three (3)
research proposal for male and female category, gaining the highest number of stars were selected.
Research Simulation 3, is the Presentation portion before the panel of judges. Prof. Julkipli Wadi of
University of the Philippines – Institute of Islamic Studies chaired the panelist. Along with him were Prof. Dato Abang
Abdullah Abang Alih of WAMY Southeast Asia, Dr. Isa Hassan of Jamiya Singapore, Brother Abdul Rawuf Hussein of
WAMY Malaysia, Engr. Nabeel Alkadi of WAMY Philippines and Shaykh Mohammad Zaid Alhilal of WAMY
Bangladesh. Most of the judges appreciated the creativity of the presentations and commending a quite number of
topics that were interesting and timely at the current age. Prof. Wadi reminded the selected presenters to give due
attention on technical aspects of a good research paper.

Trending nowadays are the formulation and/or establishment of youth organizations in various schools and
communities around the world. Unfortunately, coupled with this growing development is also the collapsed of
the former. One important reason of such case is the lack of technical skills and competencies among its
outward officers and usurping members. Furthermore, the advent of internet is unstoppable which both
millennial and booming has to adapt to such technologies. Whether we like it or not, it has become innate in the
everyday lives of this generation.
In this part of break-out sessions, participants previously chose their own skills development program (SDP)
track upon registration on Day 1. Such program would help them as an individual and for them to further apply it
to their respective field of advocacies and organization. The whole day sessions were divided into three groups.
These are Managerial Skills for Organizational Operations, Digital Da’wah Workshop and WAMY Staff Training.
Managerial Skills for Organization was facilitated by Brother Aman Ali, an invited guest who came all the way
from London, United Kingdom. Brother Aman is currently the London Regional Manager of Muslim Engagement
and Development (MEND).
Brother Aman Ali divided the training into morning session as absorption of input and afternoon for
application of learning. The participants were clustered according to male and female and strictly implement the
gender sensitivity in Islam including time management. The following is his concentration of the workshop:
In the morning session, Bro. Aman discusses the book of Stephen R. Covey entitled the “7 Habits of Highly
Effective People” – a top selling book proving the principle of fairness, integrity, honesty, and human dignity, and
some Quranic verses as the foundation of the discussion. By application, Brother Aman inculcated some
modification inclusion of Islamic teaching and principles (Hadith and Sunnah) and its relationship to the modern
structure and environment of day-to-day conditions in the organization.

He further discussed the importance and role of each position from head down to member including the
contribution of the volunteers. Next, he presented the etiquette and Islamic aspect in response to some
foreseen challenges in program’s planning and implementations. For instance, he mentioned that in some cases,
there were some thin issues in partnering to some Ulamah or Islamic Scholars. It is vital to pay respect to the
wisdom-bearers or the Ulamah in order to establish a harmonious relationship between the young ones and the
once young.
After the intensive sessions in the morning, the participants were given opportunity to apply the concepts
they have learned. The student leaders were divided into different groups and they were given case analysis.
Each group was given three case analysis and forty minutes of group discussion on the case and present solution
to the problems. After the group discussion, each group were asked to response to their respective cases.
In order to scrutinize the level of teamwork within the group, Bro. Aman presented a team building activity
that would measure their cooperation, creativity and leadership capacity called “Building a Tower” using noodle
stick and marshmallow. In this game, each group were given fifteen minutes to build tower using the given
materials and whoever has the highest tower and stand still will be the winner. The game really challenge the
patience of each group and after the given time, surprisingly, two groups of women won the game even though
their numbers were small compare to men. In contrast, majority of men group’s tower collapsed. As result, the
significant of women in the organization as said by our trainer play a major role to contain conflicts and balance
of any circumstances.
Accordingly, synthesis is a part of any implemented program is important because it emphasizes area of
improvement and strengthens the relations of people within the organization through appreciation of volunteer
works. Thus, Bro. Aman seeks insights and reflections from the participants wherein majority of them shares
positive feedback and appreciation. RYC Organizers also prepared a set of questionnaires and coined it as “Quiz
Deen” to refresh the memories of the participating audience about basic knowledge of the Islamic faith.
Whereas, WAMY Philippines Office through the RYC Program Secretariat presented a small Tokens of
Appreciation to Brother Aman Ali as Guest Trainer. The program ended with a Commemorative Photos with all
participants.

Track B: Digital Da’wah Workshop

Editor: Adzhar J. Madjid
The major problem faced by the millennial Ummah of today is that they are looking for emotional,
psychological and at some point, spiritual support from those other than their parents and their families. The
audiences now are already not among the Jama’ah in the Masaajid, not the seminar attendees in auditoriums, and
not even the students in classrooms. They are account users of facebook, 62nstagram, twitter, viber, youtube,
google, and wherever portals this digital world opens them to. This is the status quo of the generation of the youth
nowadays where everyone is very much inclined in the world of modern technology.
Thus, Digital Da’wah Workshop was specially designed to address social media etiquettes. This is a continual
development of a new Digital Media community from RYC 2016 and in order to equip the participant to this
workshop with the proper Da’wah utilizing social media. The workshop was facilitated by Do Good Team of WAMY
Malaysia.
The DoGood project was implemented to correct misconceptions, rebuttal misinformation, share the beauty
of Islam and promote Muslim icons as exemplary characters to emulate. The project was efficiently introduced then
that it called every participants to be encouraged and equally thrilled to become contributing volunteers of the good
quest.
The challenging part was to invite participants understand and inculcate in their minds wholeheartedly self-
reminders upon bringing them to the cause of nurturing information-age Da’e. The seminar-workshop was crafted to
be an encouraging guide for those who would just begin photo and video editing and to be a complementary guide
for those who had already begun. The chance to showcase the finished videos of every participant was
acknowledged and played during the series of lectures such as the short film of Mindanao State University – Iligan
Institute of Technology Muslim Student Association (MIMSA) entitled “Salimot” and also their music video entitled
Bolos Ka Kalilintad (Welcome Peace) and other several videos shared by the delegates.

Interestingly, different software for graphic design, photo editing and video editing were introduced to the
participants. Different online and mobile applications of music, photo and video that are made available and
downloadable for all users were introduced as well. A proper etiquettes and morality using electronic
communications and social media in delivering the goodness of Islam was delivered by Sister Farwina Faroque, Do
Good Member of Team Malaysia. Sister Farwina instilled the importance of social media to the young audience, as
she quoted “it could be a tool to spread the beautiful teaching of Islam”. Another workshop proper and actual
demonstration of the use of video editing software Da Vinci Resolve was led by Brother Fakhrul Shahbudin where
participants had actively involved.
Likewise, RYC Organizers have prepared a set of questionnaires coined as “Quiz Deen” to refresh the
memories of the participating audience to this workshop on basic knowledge of the Islamic faith.

WAMY Malaysia has already bought a piece of land that cost RM3.6 million in Putrajaya and
10% deposit has been paid. However, Riyadh Office has cancelled the purchase of the
land and WAMY Malaysia will try to get back the deposit, if a new buyer can be found.
The purpose of acquiring the land was to develop a WAMY Centre for the region.

The Chairman reminded to focus on the regional Leadership project, and not on the
country project.

Track C. II - Training for WAMY Staff
WAMY by principle is able to sustain its operation with and without direct supervision from the international
headquarter. This is a milestone that is worth to acknowledge. However, this doesn’t excuse the fact that staff of
international offices necessitate changes which requires them to be equipped and rejuvenated to successfully run
the organization even after transition. This series of trainings were especially designed to get experiences and ideas
for better sustainability of the regional branches to ensure efficiency in all WAMY related activities/projects. The
training aim to assist all staff, if deem possible, of WAMY in the South East Asian region.
Prof. Abdullah Abang Ali, WAMY Representative to Southeast Asia, conducted the training on Management
and its facets. In his lecture, he emphasized the Importance of Time, Managing Work and People, Financial/Money,
and Traits of a Good Manager.

Phase IX: Day 3 – Closing & Awarding Programs and Evaluation Sessions
The gravity that lies at the end of any event, often feels heavier, and a little sad. It is where the organizers
have to patch up together the myriad of experiences each participant has. In a way, it is a means by which the
program achieves the clarity of its meaning, where the delegates can finally have a glimpse of what the program has
been about. The challenge for a closing program therefore, is to make sure it does that.
RYC 2017’s closing program was structured as a simple ceremony, where everyone have given the opportunity to
express their experiences in the conclusion of the 3-day event. Despite the instruction to speak with formality and
brevity, it was quite difficult for the sharers to remain unemotional. For many, this convention has totally changed
their perspectives in life. For others, it ignited further their passion for Islamic Works. Much of the feedback were
expressions of gratitude and thankfulness for getting a chance to participate in one of the largest gathering of
Muslim young leaders around the country. Delegates from different parts of the Philippines and those attending
from foreign countries shows appreciation to WAMY in general for providing such an avenue to molds and connect
young individuals in a moderate Islamic environment.
On top of the closing program, two of the stellar personalities in Manila was also invited to grace it. Ms. Flordeliza T.
Villaseñor, Director of Museo ng Maynila, spoke passionately about the importance of ethics in the digital world,
thereby reinforcing the general message of the Convention. Dir. Villaseñor reiterated four (4) key point learnings to
summarize the 3-day convention revolving around Ethical Concerns namely Privacy, Accuracy, Accessibility and
Property. Psupt. Crizaldo O. Nieves, DDDA of Quezon City Police District, although he preferred to be seated silently
on the presidential table along with her wife, also made a well-appreciated presence.
After this followed the highlight of the evening: the awarding ceremony for the winners of the different categories.
The victors are as follows:

The selection of the abovementioned awardees was among the most difficult tasks delegated to the organizers, as
there were often always numerous strong contenders in each category. The Delegates who were gathered for the
convention never failed to showcase how the best minds from their home cities work. There were too much
activism, too much strength, too much promises that the event opened up. It was like for the first time, a hidden
constellation that will be the strength of this Ummah revealed itself in a dark uncertain sky. With this one realizes
that truly Almighty Creator has given us the strength to counter the challenges of our time. The youth of this
Ummah, as reflected by the Convention, is the investment that our current leaders must never fail to take.
The program closed solemnly by Dr. Muhammad Redwanur Rahman, head of WAMY Philippines, thanking everyone
who made the event successful. Truly, RYC 2017 has the mark of a successful and beneficial event, an effort that we
all need to have and sustain, especially in these dark times.

2nd Regional Youth Convention
17-19 November 2017, Manila, Philippines
The last day of the convention was filled with anticipation and eagerness to start something new and sustain
existing endeavors. Delegates for the last time converged during breakfast to finally bid farewell for one another.
Nevertheless, the farewell was never dull as group per cluster, region and even those sharing similar advocacies
were seated next to each other in a round table to discuss implementation of their identified initiatives.
Whereas, staff of WAMY Philippines were also present therewith to facilitate some discussion on possible
collaborations and engagement among participants. The Da’wah & Education Department initially announced its
future objective to launch a Core Group of Volunteers for WAMY Regional Club in the Philippines. Brother Adzhar J.
Madjid and Shaykh Albani Pagayawan, assured the participants that WAMY Philippines will continue to provide
opportunities for the youth organizations in the Philippines. In the hope to do more for this Ummah, various
delegations have pledged to continue working in their respective schools and communities, as well as in becoming
an active volunteers for WAMY.
Exchanges of contact numbers, email address, groups and pages, websites and blogs, and of course hugs and
handshakes dominated the Departure Area at the lobby and Breakfast Hall. May ALLAH SWT accept the sincere
efforts of the organizers, the guest speakers, volunteers and facilitators, the active participation of the delegates,
and unwavering support of the sponsors and donors to make Regional Youth Convention 2017 a success.
