Open-Ended Scoring Rubric

Points Criteria

A 4-point response clearly demonstrates understanding of the task,


answers all parts of the question,
stays focused throughout the explanation,
4 provides textual support (cites the text),
expands on the citation by explaining how it is connected to the answer.
The answer is extended with a connection to another text, the world, or
personal experience.

A 3-point response demonstrates an understanding of the task, answers all


3 parts of the question, and provides some explanation using textual support (cites
the text).

A 2-point response may answer all parts of the question, but demonstrates a
2 limited understanding of the task, and may be missing textual support or uses
the text incorrectly, resulting in a weak or confusing explanation.

A 1-point response does not answer all parts of the question, demonstrates little

understanding of the task, and provides little reference to the text.

0 A 0-point response is off-topic.
