Technology Integration-Collaboration

Piazza is an online collaboration tool that allows high school students to communicate, ask questions, and discuss topics outside of the classroom. It has discussion boards, assignments, and spaces for teacher-student communication similar to Blackboard. The integration idea proposes using Piazza's anonymous discussion boards to encourage students to ask questions without fear of judgment. It could also use polls for in-class reviews. While difficult to fully integrate into lessons, Piazza facilitates peer-to-peer learning and helps absent students stay caught up by accessing discussions. The integration idea rates between a 2 and 3, as Piazza would likely increase student engagement and support mastery through facilitating conversations about concepts.

RESOURCE DESCRIPTION
Piazza is an online resource that is a way for students to collaborate and communicate outside of the classroom without having to
rely on email. It is also helpful for teacher-student communication as well. It has some similarities to Blackboard in that you can
have assignments, quizzes/exams, discussion boards, and announcements all organized together online. It stresses student
collaboration (i.e. Im confused on a specific topic, can anyone help explain it?). This way the students are learning how to help
each other in a working environment, and in some cases, even learning the skills associated with being a leader.

INTEGRATION IDEA - COLLABORATION

Piazza itself may be difficult to emerge into a lesson plan. There are options that could make it work though. One way to use it is
that teachers have the option of making discussion boards anonymous. This could be used in a lesson where you as the teacher
are trying to get students to ask more questions, and they may do so because theres no pressure for being judged or asking a
stupid question. Also, there are polls/ in-class response. This could be helpful, especially in history classes, when it comes to
maybe a review for a test when focusing on vocabulary.
Where there are possible difficulties using Piazza in a classroom setting, it is more than made up for outside of the classroom. It
facilitates knowledge, and it can be mostly peer-to-peer. You can set up discussion boards for the students to discuss certain
topics. It is also a really great tool for students who were absent during that day to still be able to remain at least somewhat
caught up. All they would have to do would be to login and look at the discussion board.

VALUE-ADDED EXPLANATION

Based on the value-added rating scale above, how would you rate the technology integration you described, using the
selected resource?
Explain your rating based on the rubric indicators.

I would say Piazza is somewhere between a 2 and a 3. While it is difficult to use in a class, it has the potential to be very
helpful in engaging students and contribute to mastery of concepts outside of the classroom. It would at the very least
support mastery because of the ease of the students to be able to make conversation about the concept with their peers
where theres not as much pressure as if they were in the classroom.
