What is Bonsai?
Bonsai is an ancient art form that originated in China and Japan which
is primarily focused on producing beautiful miniaturized trees and
plants. Bonsai is in fact a Japanese version of the original Chinese word
‘penzai’ that was applied to this oriental art form.
The word ‘bonsai’ is made up of two root words, ‘bon’ meaning tray and
‘sai’ which means plant. Thus, a literal translation is ‘plant in a tray’
which gives you a ‘flavour’ of the art of bonsai. An essential part of
bonsai is that the plants are always planted in a pot of some type (there
are many different forms of pot used for the purpose of growing bonsai
trees). You will often see the term ‘tree in a pot’ used to describe
bonsai.
A small tree or plant is not accepted as bonsai until it has been carefully
pruned and teased into the desired shape. Bonsai trees are not
necessarily naturally small, nor are they the shape that they are
because that is the way they were going to grow anyway.
The whole art of bonsai has two sides to it.
On one hand, there is the appreciative viewer who takes great pleasure
in the beauty and the aesthetics of the bonsai tree, whilst on the other
side, you have the grower.
The person who grows a bonsai tree plays an extremely important role
in the art of bonsai. Nor only do they spend many pleasurable hours
tending and growing their plants, they also take great pleasure in
knowing that their creation will bring immense enjoyment to others.
This is an essential element of bonsai that you must grasp from the
beginning. Bonsai is not just about owning a miniaturized tree, it is
more about the art and craft of creating and caring for them.
