Introduction

The purpose of this guide is to help you in going through the Elective Postings which is a
compulsory component of the curriculum. During this period; you are expected to
broaden your knowledge and experience in many areas.
The Elective Posting is of 6 weeks duration. You can select 1-3 specialties, each
speciality being not less than two weeks. You are expected to be attentive and
responsible to the duties entrusted to you and show determination to enquire and learn as
much as possible during your placement.
The objectives of the Elective Postings are:
1. to develop intellectual skills in, for example, analysis of the problems and
proposing solutions to them, organizing work, and writing reports.
2. to develop your personality and your understanding of individuals and groups in
the work environment.
3. to provide relevant information and experience which may help in a students
career choice.
During Training
As soon as you reach the hospital, report to the Director of the hospital and then meet the
Head of the Department (where you are going to work) who will be supervising you
throughout your placement period. Try to settle down and note some details, such as
Hospital Supervisors contact number and email ID, in order to complete the reply form
(Appendix A) which will be submitted (by email) to your Deans office. Besides using
this information to communicate with your Hospital Supervisor, the information will also
be kept in our database for future elective postings.
During your training, you will be guiding by two supervisors, namely Hospital
Supervisor with whom you will be interacting almost daily during the training period and
your Faculty Coordinator for Elective Postings at the Medical School with whom you
will communicate through email or phone.
Weekly Log
You are required to document all your activities during your hospital training. A weekly
log which documents your activities for each week must be certified by the hospital
supervisor (refer to Appendix B)
The certified copies of the weekly logs are to be kept by you and included in the
Appendix of the Final Report.

When Completing your Training

Just before completing the elective posting:

Request your hospital supervisor to complete the evaluation form.


Complete your Elective posting final report, get the approval of the hospital
supervisor and submit two copies to the School within a week after completion
of the training. The report layout guide is given in Appendix C.

The Final Report


You are required to submit a report on the aspects of the work that you have carried out as
part of your elective posting period.
Important Note: You have to include the weekly logs as attachment to the report.
Please follow the guidelines on how to write the final report as required in Appendix C.

Presentation
Once you have completed your training successfully, you may be asked to present your
experiences to other students and the faculty members.

Elective Posting Evaluation


The evaluation of your Elective Posting involves two examiners. First, the Hospital
Supervisor will examine your daily conduct during the training. The second examiner
will be the Faculty Coordinator who will be in constant touch with you by email or
phone. The summary of the evaluation process is shown in the table below:

Unexpected Events
In case, a particular student has severe has severe fallout or some form of argument (or
frequent non-constructive communications) with his/her hospital supervisor, the student
has to inform the Faculty Coordinator as soon as possible. In the absence of Faculty
Coordinator, the student should try to make immediate (dont wait until the end of the
training period) contact the Deans office to report on the uneasiness faced by him/her.
If a student is going through (during training) any form of harassment please report to the
Faculty Coordinator immediately.
The Faculty Coordinator or the school will decide whether the particular student has to
change the hospital for training. The student should not decide on his/her own on the
change of training placement prior to the approval of the Faculty Coordinator.
For any reason, if a student could not contact the Coordinator, he./ she should contact the
Deputy Dean / Dean of the Medical School.
