LESSON PLAN Topic: Sentence Structure


Class Level: Intermediate Class Duration: 45 minutes Class Strength: 30 Students Language Skill: Grammar (Basic Sentence Structure) Method: Direct Material provided: Hand outs, white board, marker, and eraser Audio/Visual Aids: Use of low cast material

Learning Objectives: At the end of the lesson the students should be able to

Identify various parts of a sentence Define, subject, verb and object Define and form terms such as: letter, alphabet, word, sentence

Procedure: Brain storming to activate students schematic knowledge In this session the teacher enters the class and welcomes the students. He also asks about their health and studies. Next, in order to gain their attention the teacher shares a joke or tells about the importance of describing sequences in daily life. After gaining students attention the teacher asks the following questions to activate students prior knowledge. 1. 2. 3. 4. How many alphabets are there in English? How many letters are there in English? What forms a word? When we combine words what grammatical structure do we have?

Presentation: After activating students existing knowledge the teacher writes the topic on the board SENTENCE STRUCTURE and explains it. The teacher also discusses the various components of a sentence like subject, verb and object. He also gives practical examples to inculcate the basic knowledge of a sentence in the minds of the students. Sentence: A sentence is a group of words that gives clear cut meanings. It has three basic parts: Subject: it is a doer of an action. For example, in the sentence I teach grammar. I is the doer and hence the subject. Verb: it is an action word and shows the action performed by the subject. In the above example sentence teach is a verb. Object: it is defined as the receiver of an action. In the above example the word grammar is an object. Practice: In the practice session the class will be divided in to pairs. One student will make a sentence and the other will have to identify its various parts. The teacher will move around in the class and ensure the students practice the assigned task. He will also observe, guide and correct where needed.

Production: The students will demonstrate the use of subject, verb and object in their writing. They will be asked to write few sentences using the basic sentence structures.

Recap: If the teacher feels that that the students still face difficulties in understanding the basic sentence structure he will recap some of the main points again and then assign them home work as to Write down ten sentences and highlight the Subject, Verb and Object At the end the teacher wind up his class by saying Assalam o- Alaikum or Good bye to his students.
