A Venn Diagram helps organize similarities and differences between two things. Using a Venn
Diagram, it is easy to compare and contrast two things.
Please complete the following Venn Diagram for scalars and vectors. (4pts)

Notes for the Teacher
Lesson Objectives:
SWBAT list examples of scalar quantities including: distance, speed, and mass (PHY-1.1)
SWBAT list examples of vector quantities including: displacement, velocity, acceleration,
and force (PHY-1.1)
SWBAT compare and contrast vector and scalar quantities (PHY-1.1)
Directions:
• Photocopy and cut out one set of cards above for each group of students. Scalar
quantities are on the left; vector quantities are on the right.
• Give the instructions, “Take this set of cards and organize them into two groups. Come
up with a rule for how to categorize them. For example if you had bunch of dogs and
cats you could put them into two groups using the rule, ʻone group meows and the
other group woofsʼ.”
• Circulate and ask questions the challenge the rules students create.
• Consider reserving one or two cards to deliver to groups after they have their rules
created. This will allow them to test their rules with new information.
• When the students have created their rules (to your satisfaction), hand out the
worksheet.
• Debrief as needed.
