Rizhao faces Korea and Japan across the sea to the east and Qingdao neighbouring it in the northeast. Weifang borders it along the north and Linyi from the west and southwest.
Rizhao is a prefecture-level city and administers Donggang District, Lanshan District, Ju County and Wulian County. Rizhao Economic and Technological Development Zone and Shanhaitian Tourism & Vacation Zone' come under the city's jurisdiction.
The city occupies an area of 5310km² with beautiful, sun-kissed 62-miles (100km) of coastline.

Rizhao's main advantage lies in its two international ports - Rizhao Port and Lanshan Port. Rizhao has become China's largest port, maintaining relations with major ports across numerous countries worldwide.
Transportation is at its optimum with the port connected with two highways and two railways. It connects Rizhao with Xi'an in China and Port of Rotterdam (Holland), and Port of Antwerp (Belgium), among other European ports.
Rizhao Shanzihe Airport is located in Houcun town in Donggang District. Qingdao International Airport is at a distance of 87mi (140km) and Lianyungang Airport at 74.5mi (120km) from Rizhao city.

As a coastal city, Rizhao's eastern part enjoys a humid, warm, monsoon climate, while the western part enjoys a temperate continental climate. Winter is cool and windy, and summer is generally humid and hot. Temperatures during summer or winter do not differ much, and the area benefits from a moderate temperature all year round. The annual average temperature is 12.95°C (55.3°F). Tourists can visit the city at any time of the year.
