Mayo 4, Tartan 3
OAKDALE — Jacob Canfield scored 2 minutes, 36 seconds into the third period, snapping a 2-2 tie and putting Rochester Mayo in front for good in a 4-3 non-conference boys hockey victory at Tartan on Thursday.
It’s the first victory of the season for the Spartans, who had been inching closer to getting one in recent games. They are now 1-4-0 overall, with Thursday’s win coming on the heels of losses against Mankato West and New Prague by a combined three goals.

Tartan grabbed the first lead Thursday, midway through the opening period, when Carter Martin scored.
Max Benson made it a 2-0 Tartan lead just 68 seconds into the second period.
But that’s when Mayo’s offense took control. The Spartans rattled off the next four goals to take the lead for good.
Jesse Hendrickson scored on a power play 9:25 into the second period — his third goal of the season and third in two games — to spark Mayo’s comeback. Fionn Pittock scored with 2:27 to go in the middle period to tie the score 2-2 going into the third.
Mayo came out strong in the final 17 minutes, with Canfield scoring in the first three minutes of the period for a 3-2 lead, then Sonny On tallied the game-winning goal 5:55 into the frame.
Mason Hinchley (25 saves) took care of the rest in goal for Mayo. He allowed a goal to Braxton Remackel with 53 seconds to go in the game, but Tartan (1-3-0 overall) couldn’t get the tying score.
Spartans coach Matt Notermann praised the effort and energy of Landry Schneider and Gabe Dozois in the crucial third period; their work forced a turnover that led to Pittock's goal. Notermann also noted the play of Canfield and senior defenseman and captain Tommy Verdick, noting they were steady throughout the entire game.
