1999: Tornado touches down in Lewiston

Highlights of news reported in 1999, 1974, 1949 and 1924.

1999 – 25 years ago

  • A tornado was on the ground for 3 ½ miles, and it skimmed Lewiston's Main Street, destroying four homes and damaging 26 others. Farm buildings and businesses also suffered extensive damage. Trees and power lines were down and there were two reported minor injuries.

1974 – 50 years ago

  • Chatfield's Chosen Valley High School band won top honors in the Winona Steamboat Days band competition. Vernon Anderson directs Chatfield's band.
  • Nine-year-old Brian Bigelow caught an 11-pound 2-ounce Northern fishing at Split Head Lake near Grand Rapids.

1949 – 75 years ago

  • Bernie Bierman, head football coach at the University of Minnesota, will head a football coaching clinic at Camp Pendleton, CA. Bierman is a lieutenant colonel in the Marine Corps Reserves.
  • Mel Carter and Red Jones from Rochester were selected to play in the Southern Minnesota League All-Star game.

1924 – 100 years ago

  • The Kruse Lumber Company & Coal Company will build 100 picnic tables to be placed in the Rochester tourist park. The tables will be constructed with white pine.
  • A St. Paul man was pulled over by Rochester police, who found two bottles of moonshine whiskey in his vehicle. The man was arrested, put in the county jail, and the judge has set bail at $500.
