Frequently Asked Questions
What are Percona Operators?
Percona Operators automate deployments, scaling, and backup and restore operations of the databases on Kubernetes and come with years of Percona Expertise encoded in them. Percona Operators automate the creation of ready-to-use database clusters of open source, enterprise-ready flavors of MySQL, MongoDB, and PostgreSQL, created and supported by Percona.
Use Percona Operators to automate database operations on k8s or build a private DBaaS to speed up time-to-market for developers, run a Kubernetes shop, or deploy and manage databases on thousands of IoT devices.
Are Percona Operators free?
Percona Operators are distributed under an Apache license; the code is stored on GitHub. Community support and commercial Percona Support Services are available to help if an issue arises. Although we provide commercial support for Percona Operators, no restrictions exist for usage.
Why do I need Percona Operator instead of using my own scripts?
Using your own scripts to automate database operations on Kubernetes is a viable option for many users. In fact, this is what many Percona Operators users, and customers of Percona Global Services, have been doing for a long time. Using your own scripts implies not only the high level of in-house expertise needed for script development but also added workload for testing, maintenance, and support of these scripts. If there is a better way to make databases run efficiently at peak performance, why not employ it? Percona Operators are created by our Experts, who have more than two decades of experience, and are rigorously and continuously tested on various Kubernetes flavors and Openshift. Percona software is also secure and compliant: We rely on independent verification of our security, privacy, and compliance practices to help you meet your regulatory and policy objectives.
How are Operators updated and supported?
Are there any prerequisites for using Percona Operators?
At a minimum, you would need a Kubernetes or Openshift cluster with storage support. Refer to Percona Operators’ documentation for a full list of requirements for each flavor:
- Percona Operator for MySQL
- Percona Operator for MongoDB
- Percona Operator for PostgreSQL
Operational stability and performance depend on various Kubernetes flavors and versions with backward compatibility offered by Kubernetes itself.
Are Percona Operators ready for production-grade workloads?
