TOP 10 BUSIEST AIRPORTS IN CHINA | JANUARY 2025
KEY POINTS
- Baiyun International (CAN) is China's busiest domestic airport this month, with 3.3m seats, and increase in capacity by 1.4% vs last year.
- Shenzhen (SZN) and Beijing Capital (PEK) airports are a close second and third busiest with 3.04M and 2.95M seats respectively.
- Capacity at Bejing Capacity reduced by 2.1% vs last year.
- Capacity increased most within the Top 10 at Chengdu and Xi'an Xianyang airports, increasing by 3.7% and 3.2% respectively vs January 2024.
- Capacity at Shanghai Hongqiao (SHA) and Chongqing both reduced by 1.9% vs last year.

China's Top 10 Airlines by departing seats (one way)
KEY POINTS
- China Southern remains China's largest carrier, with 11m seats. Nevertheless, China Eastern Airlines has reduced the difference between the two airlines with 10.8m seats and both represent 15% of the domestic market.
- The Top 10 carriers remains unchanged this month and represents 71% of the domestic market.
- Percentage wise, Xiamen Airlines and Shandong Airlines have made the biggest increases in capacity vs last year, with 13% and 11% more domestic capacity respectively than in January 24.
- Juneyao Airlines has reduced capacity by 7% vs last year.
TOP 10 BUSIEST AIRLINE ROUTES IN CHINA | JANUARY 2025
KEY POINTS
- Beijing Capital Airport to Shanghai Hongqiao (PEK-SHA) is still China's busiest route with 600,400 seats, despite another reduction in capacity this month of 7% vs last year.
- Capacity on the Shanghai to Shenzhen (SHA-SZX) and Guangzhou-Shanghai (CAN-SHA) routes also reduced by 14% and 12% respectively vs January 2024.
- Capacity on the Chongqing-Shenzhen route (CKG-SZX) has increased most, increasing by 12% vs January 2024. This takes it into the Top 10 and displaces Chengdu to Shenzhen (CTU-SZN).

KEY POINTS
- Beijing remains the busiest city this month with 5.4m seats through the 2 main airports, with capacity unchanged vs last year.
- Capacity at Shanghai, the second busiest city with 4.7m seats, has reduced marginally by 0.6% vs last year.
- Chengdu is the third busiest city, only 364,500 seats less than Shanghai with 4.3m seats. Capacity in Chengdu has increased by 4.7% vs last year.
- The Top 5 cities account for 28.4% of domestic capacity this month.
DOMESTIC VS INTERNATIONAL AIRLINE CAPACITY | JANUARY 2025
KEY POINTS
- Domestic capacity accounts for 91% of all seats to, from and within China this month, with international making up the remaining 9%.
- Domestic capacity grew by 4% and International capacity by 33% vs last year.
DISTRIBUTION OF CHINA'S INTERNATIONAL AIRLINE CAPACITY BY COUNTRY | JANUARY 2025
KEY POINTS
- Japan is the busiest international market with 1.1m seats. It has now recovered and exceeded 2019 levels, increasing by 62% vs last year.
- The next 3 busiest international markets remain behind 2019 levels. Thailand with 979,200 seats is 16% lower than 2019 capacity.
- International capacity is recovering strongly vs last year, particularly to Malaysia, Viet Nam, Japan and Thailand.
- Capacity has more than doubled to Malaysia and is 23% higher than in 2019.
TOP 10 PROVINCES BY SEAT CAPACITY | JANUARY 2025
The table shows domestic capacity by Chinese Province for this month and the same month last year.
KEY POINTS
- Domestic capacity has increased 4% vs January 2024.
- The largest Province for scheduled domestic airline capacity remains Guangdong Province, accounting for 8m seats which is 11% of all scheduled departing capacity in January 2025. Guangdong has 2.6m more seats than Beijing province, the second biggest province with 5.4m seats.
- Hainan Province has increased capacity most, increasing by 9% vs last year.
- Domestic capacity in Shanghai Province reduced by 1% vs January 2024, continuing the previous month's decline.
- The Top 10 Provinces remains unchanged and account for 59% share of domestic capacity.
