Robin Stein

Robin Stein is a reporter on the Visual Investigations team at The New York Times, which combines traditional reporting with advanced digital forensics.

She shared in Pulitzer Prizes for a series examining fatal police traffic stops (National Reporting, 2022), for coverage of the coronavirus pandemic (Public Service, 2021), and for investigative reporting into deaths and injuries among American workers (Public Service, 2004).

Her recent work for The Times includes investigations of the Uvalde school shooting probe, the Jan. 6 Capitol attack and radio communications among Russian soldiers in Ukraine.

Ms. Stein had previously worked with the Investigations unit in conjunction with “Frontline” and the CBC, digging into the safety practices at pipe foundries, the trip-wire pricing of credit card companies, and television news stories that were actually produced by the Bush administration. The projects triggered congressional hearings and criminal prosecutions, and won several journalism honors.

Ms. Stein also worked at The Tampa Bay Times, Dan Rather Reports and Yahoo News, reporting print and video stories about the exploitation of guest workers, economic inequities in the long-haul trucking industry and the first in-depth investigation of “castle doctrine” laws. Her hourlong investigation of STEM Ph.D.s won The Front Page Award for Science Reporting.
