Minnesota Governor and former vice presidential candidate Tim Walz's daughter, Hope, calls it a "red flag" for someone to want to become the president of the United States.
Hope Walz, 24, posted a video on TikTok Monday criticizing those who seek the White House, saying that "the only people that should want to be president" are kids in preschool or elementary school.
"If you legitimately want to be president or, like, vice president or any of that, no, something's wrong with you," she said.
Newsweek reached out to Tim Walz's office via email for comment.
Why This Matters
Hope Walz's dad was Vice President Kamala Harris' running mate on the Democratic ticket. She has attracted a significant number of young followers who have used her videos as a how-to guide on how to navigate a second Donald Trump term. She has 253,800 followers on TikTok, where her videos have amassed 2.4 million likes.
As Tim Walz's oldest child, she made several appearances on the campaign trail with her dad. The Montana State University graduate also went viral in the early days of her dad's candidacy when his supporters re-shared a video of the father-daughter duo at the Minnesota State Fair.
What To Know
Hope Walz began the TikTok video by describing the comments she received after November's race that mocked her father's election loss.
She said that while she was "very confused" at first, after consideration she found it funny because she was "so glad I'm not Donald Trump and JD Vance and I don't have to live in their skin."
She said that while she believes those who feel called to make the country a better place should run for office and fill those governmental positions, "you shouldn't aspire" to be the president "for the sake of being president."
What People Are Saying
Hope Walz said in the video: "When people are like, You're never gonna go down as the second family, I'm like, 'OK? OK?' That was never even, like, a thought of something that I wanted. Like, I just wanted to make people's lives better. It's just so funny to me because, like, that is something that these people that say these things, like, they genuinely want that, and they think everybody else should."
TikTok user @thecryptowife wrote in a comment that's been liked more than 9,000 times: "Not having Tim Walz in the white house is absolutely the biggest [loss] to American society ever."
Olive Martin, who works for social media personality Tefi Pessoa, wrote in a November Teen Vogue article: "Amid this turbulence, Hope Walz, the...daughter of Minnesota governor Tim Walz and 2024 vice presidential hopeful, emerged as an unexpected yet profoundly necessary figure. In a world that demands we power through pain, Hope has used TikTok to model something radically different: a permission slip to feel, grieve, and then, when the time is right, get back to work."
What's Next
When Trump is inaugurated next Monday and assumes the presidency for the second time, Senator JD Vance will also be sworn in as the next vice president.
