UPDATED:

Firefighters were called to battle a brush fire on the west side of Slatington on Thursday afternoon.

Lehigh County dispatchers said smoke was seen along the 500 block of West Church Street around 2:30 p.m. The fire is in an area behind the borough garage, dispatchers said.

The brush fire ocurred as the National Weather Service warned there was an increased risk of fire spread amid continued dry conditions. Adding to the fire threat were low humidity and increased wind speed, according to the weather service.

The region was also under an increased risk of fire spread last Friday.

Amid the fire threat, the weather service discouraged outdoor burning. Multiple Lehigh Valley towns have also issued burn bans.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
