As the new NBA Collective Bargaining Agreement comes into effect on July 1st, the rules for NBA team have become more complicated. Teams must be smart about building their rosters and planning for the future. Therefore, it has become more important for NBA fans to have a better handle on the CBA. Fans wondering how their team might improve are trying to navigate the team-building options that are available.
With that in mind, we’re partnering with SalarySwish to use their data to attempt to answer every single question you could possibly have about the Mavericks' financial situation (and other team-building considerations).

FAQ
How much salary cap space can the Mavs have this offseason?
The Mavericks have 13 players under contract for next season. Seven are making at least $11,000,000. The Mavericks are well over the salary cap and have no chance of opening cap space. Noted above per SalarySwish, here are the important numbers to note for 2024-25:
- The cap is projected to be $141 million next season
- The luxury tax is projected to begin at $171.3 million
- The first apron is projected to begin at $178.7 million
- The second apron is projected to begin at $189.5 million
Who makes up the Mavericks roster?
- Guaranteed Salaries The salaries of Luka Doncic, Kyrie Irving, Tim Hardaway Jr, PJ Washington, Daniel Gafford, Josh Green, Maxi Kleber, Dereck Lively II, Dwight Powell, Dante Exum and Olivier-Maxence Prosper total $164,658,564.
- Dead Cap: This is actually where there is a small discrepancy in Salary Swish and some other websites. JaVale McGee was waived and stretched last August. His cap hit would be $2,348,324 each season through 2027-28. This is the number Salary Swish has. However, If JaVale McGee signs with another team the Mavericks can offset a portion of the dead cap. It’s not a lot but it reduces some. McGee signed with the Kings for the 2023-34 season. The Mavericks spread the offset out over the remaining years rather than getting the offset only in 2023-24. That’s why I, and other sites, have $2,208,568 as the dead cap amount each season. If McGee signs with another team this season, the Mavs will be able to reduce the cap hit by a similar amount.
- Non-guaranteed salaries and the date they become fully guaranteed:
- Dante Exum: $3,150,000 June 29, 2024
- Jaden Hardy: $2,019,699 June 20, 2024
- AJ Lawson: $2,120,683 Jan 10th 2025
What draft picks can the Mavericks trade?
After the 2024 NBA draft ends the Mavericks will be able to trade two 1st rounders
- 2025 Mavericks
- 2031 Mavericks
The Mavericks could potentially trade swap rights for one of their 1st round picks
- 2026 Mavericks (Swap)
The Mavericks can currently trade the following second-round draft picks:
- 2025 Raptors pick
- 2028 Lesser of Clippers and Hornets pick
- 2031 Mavericks pick
My answers for what picks are available slightly differ from Salary Swish. The Miami Heat 2028 2nd we own is tied up in the 2027 1st we sent in the Grant Williams deal. Also, in that deal, we received a pick that is just the lesser of the 2028 Charlotte Hornets and Los Angeles Clippers 2nd rounders.
