Metadata for Digital Content (MDC)
Developing institution-wide policies and standards at the Library of Congress
About the MDC Group
The Library of Congress Metadata for Digital Content Working Group was established in March 2009 and is chaired by Ann Della Porta, Integrated Library System (ILS) Office and Rebecca Guenther, Network Development and MARC Standards Office. The group includes representatives from the Office of Strategic Initiatives (OSI), Library Services (LS), the Copyright Office (CO) and the Law Library (LL) to accomplish the following:
- Recommend a common set of metadata elements that will support the use cases developed by OSI, as well as future requirements.
- Analyze existing descriptive metadata and recommend how and where the metadata should be managed, considering first whether the data should reside in the Library's ILS.
- Recommend how descriptive metadata might be created for digital objects that currently have little or no descriptive metadata.
The group is documenting metadata profiles for different digital library projects/ initiatives which draw from the master list to provide consistency for metadata usage throughout the institution, to support the metadata use cases, and to point to areas where metadata remediation might be beneficial.
