LF Research about page cover tiles

Successful projects and initiatives often rely on fresh data and insights to make the best possible strategic programming and budgeting decisions. Linux Foundation Research works with projects and community members to design and deliver original research studies that inform strategy and decision making, and assist in creating widespread awareness of open source’s utility and impact. LF Research has published dozens of research projects to help members of the open source community:

  • Explore how to best invest in, grow, and position a project to support the needs of its community;
  • Determine the best courseware to provide the most value to a project community;
  • Understand project penetration rates, to tune project development strategies and influence investment;
  • Ensure market relevance of frameworks and definitions;
  • Measure and advocate for open source involvement and investment; and
  • Communicate the differences between open and closed infrastructure and how the open approach drives innovation.

Outcomes of LF Research

Data-Driven Insights

From exploring market awareness and perception of projects, to understanding trends related to adoption, contribution, policy, and implementation of best practices, research is a valuable resource to projects at any stage of their life cycle. The Research team works with your project to customize a study to answer specific questions, test hypotheses, and build actionable insights.

Thought Leadership

Mixed methodology/qualitative research enables both thought leadership and community engagement simultaneously, creating pathways to community growth. Research findings generated by the Foundation’s Research team are regularly featured and discussed in keynotes and panels at open source events and webinars, and provide collateral for marketing teams to amplify a study’s key findings and enable knowledge transfer.

Open Data

Since its inception in 2021, Linux Foundation Research has published more than 50 studies under Creative Commons, with datasets made available under CDLA 2.0 license on Data.World. This open approach enables widespread use and dissemination of findings, creating opportunities for enhanced project discovery, and growth.
