Do not get a rental car when staying in San Francisco, it’s not necessary. We picked up a rental car in SF to drive outside of the city. When driving in SF, be careful with all the hills. Do not park in the street because of the high risk of car break-ins.

For an unforgettable wine tasting experience, drive to Napa Valley, which is only about 50 miles away from San Francisco.
  • All the big car hire agencies can be found at the San Francisco International Airport (SFO) Car Rental Center, which is accessible from all the airport terminals by taking the AirTrain Blue Line service. AirTrain stations are located in all the terminals at the airport. There is also a free shuttle service from the SFO hire Car Center to other off-site hire car agencies.
  • San Francisco is known for its steep hills, and the city center is filled with packed roads, one-way streets, and expensive parking, so you might want to avoid driving in that area. Agent was great at desk. When we got to car pick up we were offered an Audi SUV. Even though it was only a year old it was quite used. Also very uncomfortable seats to drive in. We drove a lot and not suitable for it. Also no charger for phones unless you had an older one. Radio not that wonderful either. Had rented and paid for a luxury vehicle that one had it in name only. Not pleased.

Good experience, nice staff! Super modern car that had no problems. I wish however there were more possibility to pick-up and drop-off the car outside usual working hours. On the weekend, they were only open until 3pm for drop-off. But all in all good experience! Thank you Asu for helping us!

I was not given a damage slip or told to look at the damage ahead of time on my rental car. I was told (through an email) that a scratch was there that had not been there before my rental. I drove the car the entire time with the exception of valets at my hotel and did not cause damage. Because I did not get to inspect it and was not given a form to do so, I do not have evidence that something happened under my watch and just have to take their word. I also would have liked them to tell me when I turned the car in, as I did not have a chance to see what they are saying I did. It all feels pretty unfair. This could have been resolved if they had given me a damage form ahead of time.

Horrible . We booked online after our United flight was cancelled. We were greeted by an Avis rep saying " I'm going home and we have no cars" . So we went to the next rep after standing in another line- he said the only cars were electric... not what we booked and wouldn't work for the 300 mile drive we were going to take. It was after midnight. Finally , he forced us to upgrade by asking for more money and gave us a car. The lot was full of cars when we went outside to leave. He lied to us and gave us an inferior car for more money

We were misled into taking an EV even though we had booked a gasoline car. And this is inspite of them knowing we would be traveling from SF to LA as car drop was at LA. We also pointed out our route including Yosemite. They told us we needn't worry as the car goes from 0-80% charging in 15 min on a fast charger. We struggled across the 7 days as charging was slow and the range on full charge was only 140 miles on the Subaru. Very unethical and misleading team at this branch.

Then said i couldn't pick out a car online, then stood in the LONG LONG line at the airport counter, at which point they messaged me to pick out a car online and they WOULD let me skip the line and go directly to my car (saving me at least 1 1/2 hrs.

My poor experience about pricing transparency. The cost of the rental car was 30% more than the kayak quote, and the initial estimate from thrifty. I was charged the additional 30% after returning the car, and had zero add ons. The receipt / charges are extremely unclear what the additional cost was. I attempted to reach out to their customer service and the process is to send a vague complaint form . I feel like I was scammed- but have no recourse- I definitely will not be using thrifty ever again. Also in the car pick up, the process took more than an hour and the first car had a check engine light on, that I needed to change cars

Terrible. Just pay the extra $20-40 and go with Alamo. They were not ready with our car, they were not giving updates, we waited an hour. Finally we went to the Alamo counter and asked how quickly we could get a car... it was immediately. I tried to cancel my thrifty reservation that was free to cancel and the chat support was giving me attitude and not allowing me to cancel. After some back and forth I called and canceled with ease. THEN, the car was "ready"... Never again!

Drop off was easy. Other than that, horrible experience. Did web check in so I could skip the line (their words). Ha! Had to wait in 2 lines. Took over an hour. Then was given a car with over 60K miles, no floor mats, holes in the interior , weird stains everywhere. I would have taken it back or refused it but we were already tired of waiting in line.

Do not rent from Fox/Europcar at SFO. The shuttle to the off site rental took forever to show up, and then when I got there I waited in line for well over an hour despite having a reservation. They told me I’d have to fill it up before returning but once (finally !) on the road the tank was less than half full. Felt like an experience in a developing country…. I’d gladly spend more to have a seamless and quick rental.

Horrible experience, never been so rudely treated and lied to in all my years as a business traveler. Trying to force you to buy extra insurance under the premise that the car has NO insurance at all and they can not rent out a car w/o insurance. When I explained that according to the law, all rental car has basic insurance and that my Amex card will cover the CDW he became very rude and did everything he could to prevent us from renting the car. Asking for our passports, never under my 20+ years renting cars in the USA have we even been asked to show passports and then he demanded that we show him our international driver's licenses. Did not know that such a thing even existed anymore, it's just a translation. So we had to cancel the whole thing and take the long trip back to SFO airport Worst ever
