Des Plaines Menorah Lighting Highlights Themes Of Righteousness Prevailing

About 20 Des Plaines elected officials and area residents gathered in Metropolitan Square last Monday (Dec. 30) to light the sixth “candle” of the menorah and reflect on the meaning of Hanukkah.

The holiday starts on the 25th day of the third month of the Jewish calendar and continues for eight days and nights. Since the calendar is based on the lunar cycle, those days shift around every year from anywhere between late November and late December. In 2024, the start of the holiday corresponded to Dec. 25, and Dec. 30 was the sixth day of Hanukkah.
