The proposed project aims to contribute to improving livelihoods and employment opportunities for border communities, especially women, through the establishment of a cross-border market in Zambia (Objective). Small-scale cross-border trade (SSCBT) in Zambia plays a significant role in providing livelihoods for many people, especially those living in the border areas, and often serves as a means of survival for marginalized groups, including women and youth. This project will provide seed funding for a Phase I of market development. Outputs include the development of a regulatory framework for the market, focusing on customs, trade, and immigration policies (Output 1.1). The second output will concentrate on the market's design and layout, informed by consultations with the Zambia Department of Immigration, border associations, and other relevant authorities (Output 1.2). The last output will begin to install initial infrastructure work to operationalize the market, such as basic water and sanitation facilities, perimeter fencing, vendor space allocation, and waste disposal (Output 1.3). Finally, a costed project proposal will be produced and submitted to donors for a Phase II, when the market will be fully constructed. Through this project, relevant stakeholders will have defined and begin to operationalize the necessary border infrastructure, resources and agreements to facilitate movement and economic development through a cross-border market in Zambia (Outcome).
