Whether you’re working from home, unlocking new game levels or putting in hours at the office, desks and computer desks are by your side. Technically, they’re more at your front. How high should a computer desk be?
The standard height for a computer desk is between 50-70 cm. Within this range, most people should be able to find a height that fits.
Depending on how tall you are, and what kind of desk chair you use, you can determine which height is most comfortable for you. A few general guidelines for a good desk height are:
- When sitting down, the desk should reach up to your elbows. You should be able to comfortably rest your arms on the surface in a roughly 90-degree angle.
- Underneath the desk, you should have roughly 35-40 cm from the top of your knees to the bottom of the desk. And from the bottom of the desk to the floor it should be roughly 60 cm.
- Remember that your height and your sitting position might influence your optimal desk height, but since ergonomics can go a long way in supporting your body and warding off fatigue, it’s worth spending a little time on.
Smaller desks on smaller surfaces
Smaller desks are best suited in smaller spaces. But they can be used in ways that make them incredibly surface efficient. Take, for example, a corner desk. Perfect if you really want to maximise the surface area. And if you want to hide the desk when it's not in use, we have a good tip: use a room divider. Turn a studio into a bedroom plus living space in one swift move of the divider and voila! The entire desktop disappears as if by magic. Folding desks can give you even more space. They just fold up when you're done. Try sitting by a desk or dinner table and measure the height to make a calculated choice.
