Treatment for Drug Addiction and Alcohol Abuse

Making the choice to get help for a substance use disorder is rarely easy, but it’s always worth it. If you or a loved one is struggling with addiction, the IAFF Center of Excellence has the clinical know-how, professional support and evidence-based treatments that fire fighters and paramedics need to begin the lifelong process of recovery.

Our integrated approach to treatment combines pharmaceutical, cognitive behavioral, group, and holistic therapies to heal the mind and body while building a lifelong network of support. We offer several levels of care based on each member’s needs, including clinically managed detox, inpatient residential, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient and aftercare planning.

Clinically Managed Detox

While some may not need to undergo this level of care, clinically managed detox is vital for others, especially in cases involving opioid, hypnotic, stimulant or sedative addiction. Medical professionals at the IAFF Center of Excellence help manage discomfort and provide 24/7 support during this initial stage of recovery.

Inpatient Residential

Clients in residential care live at the IAFF Center of Excellence while participating in treatment during the day. During this stage of rehab, members begin taking classes, participating in individualized and group therapy sessions, and learning the coping skills needed to commit to sobriety.

Partial Hospitalization

After completing the residential level of treatment, members may be transferred to a partial hospitalization program. This phase of treatment offers a balance between the around-the-clock care of inpatient hospitalization and the greater freedom of intensive outpatient programming. Members participate in daily group therapy and weekly individual and family sessions, in addition to healing activities like yoga, sports and journaling.

Intensive Outpatient

During this level of care, clients continue to live at the IAFF Center of Excellence. Counselors will work closely with members to help devise a comprehensive aftercare plan that prepares them for life after the IAFF Center of Excellence. Group therapy continues several times a week, along with individual and family sessions.

Online Substance Abuse Treatment

Teletherapy offers convenient, secure online addiction counseling with licensed professionals. Addiction treatments can happen anytime and anywhere with a reliable internet connection. The IAFF Center of Excellence offers teletherapy options for outpatient, intensive outpatient, partial hospitalization and medication-assisted treatment to meet the needs of members at all stages of recovery.

Aftercare

Support in your sobriety doesn’t stop after you leave the IAFF Center of Excellence. Each member graduates with a detailed aftercare plan that helps keep them focused on lifelong sobriety. This plan may include:

• Outpatient or intensive outpatient substance abuse treatment
• Individual counseling or psychotherapy
• Pharmaceutical management
• Local 12-Step, Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Narcotics Anonymous (NA), or SMART Recovery support group meetings
• Access to an alumni mentoring program
• Planning and support for returning to work
• Check-in calls with Center of Excellence staff (if desired)
