The Higashi-Hiroshima Campus spans an expansive area of approximately 250 hectares, making it one of the largest eco-friendly campuses among national universities in terms of land area. A biodiversity survey launched in 2012 has identified the presence of 62 endangered species (as of 2020), the highest number found on a national university campus in Japan. As of 2020, the campus is home to approximately 5,545 trees of 127 different species. These diverse trees are resilient to heat, cold, and dryness even in non-irrigated environments, blooming, bearing fruit, and displaying autumn colors with the changing seasons. They serve as invaluable educational resources for faculty, students, and international students to learn about Japan's unique nature, seasons, and culture, and are also beloved by the local community.
