We care about Sustainability

For more than 100 years, Hellmann’s has prioritized using high-quality ingredients in our products. It started in 1913 with Richard Hellmann only using “Blue Ribbon Quality” ingredients to create his soon-to-be famous mayonnaise sold at his New York deli. Today, we are committed to using sustainably sourced ingredients for Hellmann’s mayonnaise, dressings, and drizzle sauces. We want our products to not only taste good, but to do good for our customers and our planet.

Cage Free Eggs

All Hellmann’s mayonnaise, dressings, and spreads available in the U.S., excluding our Vegan Dressing and Spread (which does not contain eggs), have been made exclusively from cage-free eggs since January 2017. All of our eggs are certified by independent third parties, such as the American Humane Association™ and the Association For Controlled Alternative Animal Husbandry. Lids off to everyone who helps to make this happen, especially our farmers whose care and handling of egg-laying hens continue to meet or surpass animal-welfare standards!

Cover Crops

At Hellmann’s we believe soil is one of our most valuable resources. Healthy soil is the key to healthy crops. Since 2015, Hellmann’s has been working with soy farmers and soy oil suppliers in Iowa to increase the use of cover crops. Cover crops, like rye grasses, oats, and radishes, are planted after harvest and could help slow soil erosion and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. They can also lead to production benefits, improve soil nutrients and water availability. Through this program, Hellmann’s supports family-owned farms implementing sustainable farming practices that not only produce better, more nutritional crops but renew their land for future generations. Hellmann’s is working to grow this program to include over 1,000 farmers, which is enough to supply 100% of the oil needed for Hellmann’s in the US!
