Empowering the DOC holder: data-driven decisions should define FuelEU compliance strategy, says OceanScore

Ship managers must navigate tricky commercial terrain to mitigate their financial exposure as DOC holder with responsibility for compliance under FuelEU Maritime. An effective compliance strategy requires an understanding of the various operational scenarios to formulate sound ship management agreements aligned with their interests, according to OceanScore. “A one-size-fits-all approach is risky when it comes to finalizing contractual agreements. Running the numbers and performing your own analysis of different scenarios to cover all possible outcomes is vital for informed decision-making to avoid potential pitfalls,” says OceanScore’s Managing Director Albrecht Grell. ...

LNG powers unprecedented year for orders of alternative-fuelled vessels

According to the latest data from DNV’s Alternative Fuels Insights (AFI) platform the maritime industry’s exceptional newbuilding year 2024 drove a significant rise in orders for alternative-fuelled vessels. A total of 515* such ships were ordered, representing a 38% year-on-year increase compared to 2023, underscoring the industry’s growing commitment to decarbonization. The growth in alternative-fuelled vessel orders has been heavily driven by the container and car carrier newbuild boom over the last three years. In 2024, 69% of all container ship orders were for ships capable of being powered by ...

Green methanol shortages are diverting newbuilds back to LNG

According to the World Economic Forum, with around 90% of all trade being ocean-based, close to 3% of the world’s greenhouse gas footprint comes from seagoing vessels. The shipping industry is determined to accelerate its efforts to meet the Global Maritime Forum’s goal of ending fossil fuel consumption by 2050, although opinions about how to achieve this differ. At COP28, CEOs of the five largest shipping companies made a joint declaration demanding deadlines for stopping orders of fossil fuel-only powered newbuilds. This leaves the question of what to do instead. ...

Maximising Fuel Efficiency Across Different Sailing Phases

Understanding varying fuel consumption patterns Different sailing phases – open sea, coastal transits, port approaches, and manoeuvring – exhibit distinct fuel consumption patterns. A one-size-fits-all approach to fuel efficiency is inadequate because factors like speed, weather conditions, and navigational constraints impact each phase differently. During open sea voyages, ships can optimise speed for fuel efficiency based on factors like weather routing and vessel dynamics. However, as vessels approach coastal waters and ports, they must adjust speed and manoeuvring to navigate shallower depths, traffic separation schemes, and other constraints. This increased ...

How wind tech could help decarbonize cargo shipping

Inhabitants of the Marshall Islands—a chain of coral atolls in the center of the Pacific Ocean—rely on sea transportation for almost everything: moving people from one island to another, importing daily necessities from faraway nations, and exporting their local produce. For millennia they sailed largely in canoes, but much of their seafaring movement today involves big, bulky, diesel-fueled cargo ships that are heavy polluters. They’re not alone, of course. Cargo shipping is responsible for about 3% of the world’s annual greenhouse-gas emissions, and at the current rate of growth, the ...
