The Science Mill in Johnson City is adding challenging activities and daily STEM demonstrations for families seeking educational and fun diversions over the Winter Break, from December 21 through January 5.
Planned activities include:
DaVinci Bridge
Use engineering skills to build a Da Vinci Bridge using only popsicle sticks. Balance and precise placement are key to building this bridge.
No Hands Challenge
Guests will work in teams to stack cups using simple materials, all within a one-minute time limit. Teaches creative problem-solving.
Fast & Curious Cars:
A Cardboard Challenge
Guests will create their own "Fast & Curious" car using only cardboard.
Demonstrations
Foam Frenzy (Saturdays, Mondays, and Thursdays)
Guests will explore the signs of a chemical reaction in the Elephant Toothpaste experiment. By mixing hydrogen peroxide and yeast, they will create a reaction that produces a rapidly growing foam. During the experiment, guests will observe the production of heat and gas and explore the factors that affect the outcome of the reaction. They will also apply their knowledge to better understand chemical reactions they may encounter in everyday life and the real world.
Breath Power Challenge
This STEM challenge will test breath control (Sundays, Tuesdays, and Fridays).
. Guests will compete to see how many breaths it takes to fill a wind bag and whether they can outsmart the knowledgeable Science Mill staff.
Winter Break Hours are Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Friday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Sunday, 12-6 p.m. Science Mill will be closed Dec. 24-25 and Jan. 1.
