Estate Tour
When the Lloyd’s purchased Great Dixter in 1910 there were several outbuildings, including barns and farm buildings on the estate, some of which were incorporated into the layout of the gardens.
The Great Dixter estate is situated within Northiam in East Sussex. It sits within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, close to the border with the neighbouring county Kent. At its core is the internationally important Grade 1 listed garden which contains the Grade 1 listed Great Dixter House and the Grade 2 listed North Barn and Grade 2 listed Great Barn and Oast House. The surrounding estate consists of a mosaic of ancient woodland, species rich hedgerow, meadow and pasture which was at one time part of a much larger estate.
The whole estate is of considerable ecological interest. Naturalists, naturalist societies, conservation organisations, ecologists and members of staff have for a number of years been studying and documenting the biodiversity of the estate and this led to the Great Dixter Biodiversity Audit being carried out between 2017 and 2019.
