Valance or no valance?

Do I keep the valance or get rid of it? If you think I should get rid of it then how do I dress up that empty space? Also what are your thoughts on the pendant light?

I like the idea of having a valance rather than a roman shade, because it's nice to have sunlight spilling into the kitchen. But, I would definitely trade in the current valance for something more modern. It's a dated style. I went with a small chandelier rather than a pendant over my sink, and I love it. Here's a pic of my kitchen...might give you some ideas.
