Looks straightforward enough to me. Except you will need an egress window for the bedroom/living area. Labour prices are extremely local.

Hi, Get some paste wax, and some ultra-fine steel wool. Rub the finish out with them together, then buff, apply one more coat of wax with a cloth, buff with a woolen, then polish with cotton. It will be better. If you want it even more satin (less shiny), rub with dry steel wool in one direction only, then wax. For this type of finish use one 00 steel wool, not the 0000. This removes finish, so perhaps add another coat or 2 before attempting, as it wouldn't do to rub through the finish to bare wood. Casey

heat gun, outside with a type of mask should be ok. the issue with stripping is this. the stripping only works on EACH layer at a time. so those doors could have 8 layers of paint on them. that's 8 applications of stripper. Heat gun is looking mighty fine right now huh? I like to use SoyGel. (get the gallon jug- Amazon) It's the least toxic because they use soy beans. the best part is no fumes and it cleans up with water. the others you have to use a chemical wash to remove the stripper. you have to let the stripper sit for 30-50 mins in order to do it's thing. scrape off the gunk w/a good tool. repeat the process until you hit raw wood. that one door looks like it has a lot of holes. you would have to patch those w/bondo or wood filler, sand, prime and repaint that one. as for the handles, you can soak them in a crockpot (find an old one at a thrift store) to remove any old paint. stripper works on that too.

A standard door size would be 24"x80", so you should be able to get a door trimmed to the size you need. A good handyman with a table saw should be able to do the work. A solid door would definitely have the "meat" needed to take the trimming, and you can check the specs for the hollow core to see what it allows for. I think it would be pricey to have it done at a lumberyard. Most lumberyards have transitioned to a more traditional sales model where its either in stock or requires a special order. They would probably have to send the door out to have the work done. Bruce
