COP29, the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan, from November 11-22, 2024. COP29 is being dubbed the “finance COP”. A major focus being on climate finance, specifically the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) on Climate Finance, which aims to address the financial needs of developing countries to mitigate and adapt to climate change.

The host venue for COP29, Baku Stadium, is set to be powered entirely by renewable sustainable sources so it is no surprise that Day 9 largely focused on sustainable sources of energy and replacing the use of fossil fuels in the transportation sector.

As week one of COP29 concluded on Saturday, the main headlines show the conference has lived up to its name as the “finance COP”. Negotiators and world leaders have focused their attention towards the controversial USD 1 trillion global annual climate finance target – the new collective quantifiable goal – and each country’s nationally determined contributions (NDCs).
Over the weekend, attention turned to technology and innovation – the likely focus of much of the climate finance investment.
