      Listening to Canadian musicians Diana Krall and Joni Mitchell, I began writing this book in the André Akinyele Studios, Toronto, Ontario, May 2022, as a companion book to the official citizenship study guide Discover Canada: The Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship. I figured, if I had to study for the test, I knew documenting the knowledge learned in a cohesive, detailed book, while referencing the official study guide, would help newcomers also seeking Canadian citizenship. The idea is to assist those adults 18 and over wanting to become Canadian Citizens and those who have to take the citizenship test. After moving from the United States of America to Canada in January 2017, becoming a permanent resident in October 2019, and applying for Canadian citizenship in May 2022, I began studying for the citizenship test and needed a way to absorb the information. As a person with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), this book was born and I offer it to you—future Canadian citizens.

      Pathway To Canadian Citizenship

      In order to become a Canadian citizen one must apply for citizenship, prepare and take the citizenship test (if applicable) and interview, and take the Oath of citizenship in a ceremony. As of this publication, most applicants must be a permanent resident, have lived in Canada for at least three (3) out of the last five (5) years (1,095 days), have filed their taxes, pass a citizenship test, and prove their language skills in English or French. Whether you have to take the test depends on your age and application. Also as of this publication, adults 18 to 54 years of age have to take the test. The test shows Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) what you know about Canada. Thus, twenty (20) questions—multiple-choice and true or false are asked about the rights and responsibilities of Canadians and Canada’s history, geography, economy, government, laws, and symbols. The test questions are based on the official citizenship study guide: Discover Canada: The Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship. The test, usually written but may be oral, is in English or French and thirty (30) minutes long. You need fifteen (15) correct answers to pass the test.

      After IRCC sends the acknowledgement of receipt (AOR) letter (acknowledging your application is complete and processing has commenced), you may be invited to take the citizenship test within weeks. About 1 to 2 weeks before the test, IRCC will send a notice with the date, time and location (if applicable).

      When you come for your test, bring the Notice to Appear asking you to take the test; your permanent resident (PR) card (if applicable); two (2) pieces of personal identification (ID) –  one (1) piece of ID with your photograph and signature, such as a driver’s licence or health card (foreign ID documents must be government-issued, however Canadian ID documents don’t need to be government-issued); all your passports and travel documents (current and expired as listed on the application form); a certificate, diploma, degree or transcript that proves your English or French language skills (if you were 18 to 54 years of age when you signed your application); other documents asked for in the Notice to Appear letter.

      After the test, you will meet with a citizenship official for an interview. During the interview, the citizenship official will: give you the results of your test (if applicable); check your language skills (if you are between 18 and 54 years of age); verify your application and original documents; ask any questions IRCC may have about your application; and ensure you meet all requirements for citizenship. If you pass and meet the other requirements for citizenship, IRCC may: give you a ceremony date at the same time they give you the test results or email or send you a letter with the date and time of your ceremony. However, if you don’t pass your first written test, but meet the other requirements for citizenship, IRCC will schedule you for a second test. This second test usually takes place 4 to 8 weeks after the first test, but may be longer. If you do not pass your second test, IRCC will send you a notice telling you to attend a hearing with a citizenship official. If you do not pass the test after three (3) attempts, IRCC will refuse your application. But you can re-apply to try again.

      My goal is to help those immigrating to Canada, specifically, preparing for the Canadian citizenship test. By providing detailed information regarding the citizenship test, that is, who has to take the test, what to study, and what happens on test day, this can help those learn about the history of Canada, how Canada’s government works, symbols of Canada, and its regions. Referencing the study guide used by newcomers to study for the citizenship test, can also assist those who are citizens by birth or by choice to learn about Canada’s history, heritage and citizenship. Canadian citizenship among immigrants is a crucial momentum to the growth of Canada, and, because of Section 5 of the Citizenship Act, applying to become a Canadian citizen and preparing for the citizenship test, this momentum is particularly relevant to Canada today.

      Notice: The only official study guide for the citizenship test is Discover Canada: The Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship, from Citizenship and Immigration Canada at no cost. If you have applied for citizenship and are preparing for the citizenship test, your primary resource should be the official study guide. If you use any other material to prepare for the citizenship test, you do so at your own risk. But, you can use this book as a companion to study for your test. Thank you and good luck!
