The year is 1960. It is late on Saturday Night and the various cars are leaving town.Dragging main is over for the day.So those that are interested are taking the road outbytheswamp,tothesecondcrossroads,andthenturningright.Theysoonarriveatthe
grillandpoolroom.TheobjectistogetinthePokerGamegoingonintheroombetweenthe pool hall and the grill. It is usually a friendly game, 5 card draw, jacks or better toopen,progressive, withaquarterante.
TheHousehasavestedinterestinthegamebecausetheytakeaquarter(itwascalledchipping the pot
) from each game played. He’s not getting rich, but it is worth stayingup for. Assuming 12 games an hour, that’s $3.00 an hour, which was a good wage forthatyear.
Thenoneday,thehouserulechanged.Thenewrulewasthatthehousegotaminimumof $0.25 or 5% of the total pot, whichever was greater.Thus, the cost of each handvariedaccordingtothebetting,andthehousecollectedmoremoney.
The players begin to rethink this setup after a long game one evening, in which all theplayersstayedaboutevensofaraswinningsorlosseswereconcerned.However,attheend of the night, all the players were losers.The house won.The players quietlydecideditwas timeforanewarrangement.
