    With the recent death of a client social worker Chris Dennison realizes he's hitting burn out in his job but he can't seem to pull himself out of the downward spiral he's falling into. He's ready to walk away from it all until he meets a girl who shouldn't exist, who tries to show him that if he doesn't like the answers he's getting, maybe he's asking the wrong questions.

      A note from the author

      It’s been a quarter of a century since The Forest Is Crying first appeared in The Earth Strikes Back: New Tales of Ecological Horror, a collection from Mark Zeising Books edited by Richard Chizmar. 

      Back then the ecological crisis wasn't at the forefront of most people's minds and, sadly, what seemed like an emerging concern in the early '90s is now reaching catastrophic proportions. With such clear evidence of climate change around the planet, awareness has grown a great deal, so all these decades later this story might tend to overstate the obvious. Regardless, a large segment of people in the world still deny climate change—unwilling to make adjustments in their lifestyle, preferring to ignore science because it will inconvenience them. 

      I'm unsure how dire the signs have to get before these people, politicians and corporations start to get it, but for the rest of us, as we reduce our own harmful habits, let's continue to pressure our political leaders to make environmental protection an absolute priority.

      Special thanks to MaryAnn for her usual excellent job of fine-tuning the story and creating the cover. Its genesis was a photograph taken by her brother, Pat Harris, in Costa Rica, where the outgoing tide leaves magical temporary landscapes etched in the sand. Seeing Pat's beautiful photographs made me think of this story and gave me the impetus to publish it under its own banner, so to speak. Thanks, Paddy!
