About this ebook
Some Toys, You Grow Out Of.
Other Toys, They Grow Out Of You.
This collection contains one main short story followed by four shorter fiction stories.
In total, there are five original home brewed tales bred from the warped mind of yours truly which, it is hoped, should give you the reader at least a couple hours of entertainment.
We start with My Mate Mark which features a maniacal doll and his willing accomplice in crime. Then we get a chance to observe the bizarre goings on in a quiet suburban community in Heaven’s Lottery. P.M.A. restores some degree of faith in the human race before a couple of pick up artists take the stage in Silver and Streak, inspired by my own embarrassing personal experiences.

The First Victim
Even before the killing started they said I was cursed. They had me marked even before I left my ma’s belly. ‘Course, we all know what happened there. Circle of life.
What a tag team. Ma checked out before her time it has to be said. Tagged me in. You know, in wrestling, when you make the tag you get anywhere up to twenty seconds to perform a team move before the other person has to get out of the ring. Dependin’ on the ref’s generosity you see. It’s all staged anyway. Time keeping ain’t exactly one of those rules that’s enforced.
Doctors reckon I got to enjoy around forty-five seconds sharing a ring with my ma. The blood loss was too much. They said I was lucky they got to me in time. No one really knows what brought it on. They said the tests up ‘til that point showed a pretty routine pregnancy. My Da said different. Said she’d suffered terrible pain ‘specially in the last few weeks of her life. Said she’d had all sorts of dreams. Stuff like I had sliced through the sack that was my home and was running around inside her, causing all sorts of shit to malfunction.
Can you ‘magine that? A teeny me swimming around inside my ma, snipping cords, roundhouse kicking her tubes and doing speedball on her heart? He said she had suicidal thoughts ‘cos of the pain. I don’t blame her. How can I? I didn’t know her. Did she really not want me like they said? Most times I can’t even stand myself. Maybe that’s ma talking through me. Some kinda psychic transfer through trauma.
Anyway, they pulled me out while she was seven months along. Doctors didn’t exactly have time to high five each other. Ma’s pulse had dropped to forty and she was crashing hard with the blood loss. As soon as I was out, they gave her the good news. Guessin’ it didn’t exactly inspire her to hang in there. Seconds later she died. First sight I would have had if my eyes hadn’t been gummy tight would have been sheets splashed with her blood and my former home trailing out of this dead woman.
Welcome to the world son!
So you could guess that I wasn’t too hot growing up. No popularity prizes with this one. The kid that killed his ma. School years were a ton of fun. I’ve blocked out those early years. But what I do remember was the parade of concerned faces that said that they’d be looking after me for a while. They’re all muddled now. It always ended the same. Tears and apologies. A forced hug and then a promise to stay in touch. Never happened. Not once. No cards. No calls. That happened right up ‘til I was ten or eleven.
As for relatives and friends on my ma’s side, they wanted rid. Like it or lump it, they would always blame me for her death. They were probably right. But it wasn’t like it was intentional.
So that was the backdrop of my life growing up if you have to know. You can add that to your medical report. Doesn’t matter to me. You asked me for the full story. Well, I’ll give it as much as I remember it.
