      Introduction

      When I ask people around me how they feel about being married, I get the strangest looks. I live in a fairly small town, which means the people I spend time with on a daily basis, have been the same people I have seen for the past ten years. I am a people watcher, and I often find myself watching couples as they walk down the street, go into Walmart, or enter a building together. Nine times out of ten, the guy will be in the front, ahead of his lady. My husband and I always ask each other the same thing. Where is the chivalry? I wonder if it is because mothers are choosing not to raise their young men to respect the women around them. More than likely, it is because they have never experienced the chivalrous actions of a man themselves, which includes their own fathers. I was very fortunate to have a Dad that enjoyed being a gentleman. He would take special care with his appearance, dress nice, enjoyed taking my mom out to dinner and dancing. I watched him hold the door for her, and let her walk ahead of him. It was very inspirational, and helped me look for that same type of man that I am able to love even to this day.

      I have come to understand, after several wonderful years of being married, that it is truly a partnership you enter into the day you say I do. When I say that, I truly mean that it isn’t just about the giddiness you feel on the big day, but the days, weeks, and years ahead that will separate the men from the boys, and the women from the girls. Marriage is hard, and if you want a good one, you will work for it. I feel that more than anything, you must enter your marriage as if this man will be the only companion you will ever have. This person should be your soul mate. After all, you should not have entered into matrimony, without having thought it through. It is okay to have cold feet at the altar, because everyone is afraid of the unknown. There are too many women, and men who enter marriage with one foot in the lawyer’s office. Just remember, when you look down that aisle (wherever you decide to get married), the man at the other end needs to be everything to you.

      The one thing that truly disappoints me today is to see how couples will practically destroy the traditional marriage vows. I believe with all of my heart, that God decides our path, and who we will share the journey with. If you don’t have God in it from the beginning, it will never work. Life is too hard, and way too complicated for us to maneuver alone. I don’t buckle under outside pressure to change from those traditional marriage vows that I spoke before God and everyone. I meant every word, and I always will. These include honor, obedience, love, riches, poverty, sickness, and health. I have
