About this audiobook
In tumultuous 1860, South Carolina farmer Polly struggles to hold onto both her land and the slaves who plant and tend her valuable cotton, while still reeling from the murder of her young brothers years before. This horrific crime has gone unsolved and unpunished—until now. When details of the brutal murder come to light, she must make decisions that will change not only her own life, but the lives of every person on her farm.
Shelley Burchfield
A former teacher, Burchfield enjoys writing "what-if" southern fiction that flips notorious events upside down. She lives in the beautiful Upstate of South Carolina with her husband and a menagerie of animals. She pulls inspiration from the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains beyond her windows.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This important story about the history of the south and evils of what men are capable of against other men was well written. It was engaging all the way through. It was heartbreaking and hard to listen to in some parts. But it also showed that human kindness was possible even after so much personal loss. I will look for more books from this author

- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Entertaining enough, but impossible to believe. Very unrealistic main character.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Throughout this very long book, I was often frustrated by feeling left out of the thoughts and feelings of the main character. There was a sense of distance between the reader and the protagonist. I guess the book wore me down though, because about 2/3 of the way through. I really wanted to know how everybody's lives turned out.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5So good. I’m having major post-book blues. Can’t believe it’s this author’s first book. Outstanding. 10/10 Riveting story with characters you just want to latch on to and never ever let go of. I literally live in the heart of where this book is set; the research and historical accuracy is impeccable. To note, I did not know the setting upon picking it out to read—actually picked it bc it’s one of the few books on Scribd with 5 full-star rating. Here’s another one. Can’t wait to read more from this author.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A long and engaging story beginning to end. Well written and not at all shy about discussing the human failings of all characters.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5It took me awhile to become invested in the main character Polly, chapter 13 to be exact, 1/3 of the 600 page book. At the beginning she was pretty one dimensional, sweet but sheltered and I kept reading mostly to see Polly grow to see how naïve she was, once she began to have inner conflict I became more interested. How easily manipulated she was became frustrating but than again that's good writing to have the reader willing to continue reading waiting for character and plot development but after awhile her lack of resolve became tedious, it would flare for a moment and than she would forget about the atrocities that bothered her for a pretty husband, after the 5th or 6th time of this the pattern was monotonous. Because of how drawn out the beginning was the plot reveal was a little anticlimactic but I'm glad I stuck it out, my favorite development was of Tom Roper.
