The MEET-CUTE

As the train pulled out of the station, Ruth opened the day’s local paper and turned to her favourite section – the ‘Meet-Cute’ column…

To the gorgeous gal with the pink hair and Rolling Stones T-shirt. You got on at Hampton in Arden and rocked my world. Take you to a gig sometime? From the long-haired bloke in the Beatles tee.

To the smartly dressed blond man on the 9.10am, carrying the Financial Times. You’re on the money for me! Coffee? The tall redhead in the light pink blazer.

Ruth wrinkled her nose. Did people seriously respond to these ads? Were they even real? She wanted to think they were. She loved to create scenarios in her head where the couple got their happy ending after seeing their love story in black and white. Mr Beatle and Miss Rolling Stone playing air guitar together forever.

Ruth was a hopeless romantic, which was ironic, given her relationship history. But one ex-husband and a messy divorce hadn’t stopped her from trying to see the silver linings in life.
