Cage & Aviary Birds

A simple guide to feeding zebra finches

FINCHES

AS A domesticated species, zebra finches are totally used to the seed we provide them, as they have never known wild food. I have read that Australian breeders feed them on more natural wild seed, but, for us, basic domestic seed is all that they know.

We are very fortunate that there are many suppliers of quality seed that is clean and has a known nutritional value. What’s more, there are a huge amount of suppliers of medicinal additives and vitamins to help provide our birds with the very best treatment of any ailments. (For more information, May 29, which has a special focus on additives and vitamins.) Inwe can easily provide them with clean seed, fresh water and hygienic housing. And although some so-called foreign seedeaters may require more specialist food, most Australian finches, Bengalese and other common seedeaters can be kept on the following diet, which I have used throughout my lifetime in the hobby.
