As a child one of my favourite films was Disney’s Mary Poppins. I loved the way it made the London landscape a thing of wonder, I loved the songs Feed The Birds and Chim Chim Cher-ee and, even at the age of five, I had a bit of a crush on Julie Andrews.
Unlike most Disney productions there was a darkness at the heart of the film, derived from PL Travers’ original books, something I found strangely appealing, especially as I grew older.
Forty years on and a stage musical based on the film opened in the West End.
