Tante is the German word for “Aunty” and is pronounced “TAHN-tah.”
During the years I was growing up in rural North Dakota, in the 1930s and ’40s, our father’s aunt Catherine was a beloved member of our household. We younger children enjoyed going to her room in the afternoons for story time. She was a wonderful storyteller and kept us enthralled with her accounts of the Grimm Brothers’ fairy tales.
